Auston Matthews will continue pursuit of his second 40-goal season in the NHL when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; SN, TVAS, FS-SW, NHL.TV).

Matthews, whose 35 goals are second to Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak (37), also scored 40 goals as a rookie in 2016-17. He's trying to become the fifth player in Maple Leafs history with multiple 40-goal seasons (Darryl Sittler, 4; Lanny McDonald, 3; Rick Vaive, 3; Mats Sundin, 2).
Toronto has scored at least four goals in each of its past seven road games and leads the NHL with 3.76 goals per game away from home. The other times the Maple Leafs have scored at least four goals in seven straight road games are from Oct. 27-Nov. 18, 1981 and Oct. 5-Nov. 2, 1983; neither of those streaks extended to eight games.

Ovechkin resumes chase for 700 goals with Capitals

Alex Ovechkin, who has scored multiple goals in each of his past three games, including a hat trick in each of the past two, will resume his chase to become the eighth member of the
700-goal club
when the Washington Capitals play the Nashville Predators at Capital One Arena (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN).
Ovechkin enters the game tied with Steve Yzerman for ninth in NHL regular-season goals (692) and two behind Mark Messier (694) for eighth place.
Washington's captain can become the first player in NHL history to have a hat trick in three straight games. He can also become the first to score multiple goals in at least four consecutive regular-season games since San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau, who did it in four straight from Jan. 20-26, 2013.

Blues top Flames in shootout, end slide

The St. Louis Blues became the third team to reach the 70-point mark this season when David Perron and Ryan O'Reilly scored in the shootout for a 5-4 victory against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, ending a three-game losing streak.
The victory gave the Blues (31-12-8) an eight-point lead on the Colorado Avalanche (28-15-6) for first place in the Central Division. St. Louis reached 70 points in 51 games; the only times the Blues have done so in fewer games were 2000-01 (48), 2013-14 (48) and 2014-15 (50).

It was the 16th comeback win of the season for the Blues, second in the NHL behind the Capitals (17). The team record is 24 set in 1999-00.

Monahan gets 400th point for Flames

Sean Monahan scored two goals for Calgary (26-18-5) in the shootout loss to St. Louis. The first one made him the 18th player in Calgary/Atlanta Flames history to reach the 400-point mark.

Monahan, selected No. 6 by Calgary in the 2013 NHL Draft, joined Colorado center Nathan MacKinnon (474 points; 185 goals, 289 assists) as the second player from his draft class to reach the milestone.
Johnny Gaudreau assisted on each of Monahan's goals. Since their NHL debuts in 2013-14, Monahan and Gaudreau are one of six sets of teammates to combine on at least 200 goals.

Calgary visits the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET; SN360, SNE, SNO, SNW, TVAS, NHL.TV) for the first game of a home-and-home set. The Flames won each of the first two against their provincial rivals this season.

Pageau continues career season for Senators

Jean-Gabriel Pageau became a 20-goal scorer for the first time in his NHL career when he opened the scoring for the Ottawa Senators in a 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.
The 27-year-old center's previous NHL high was 19 goals in 2015-16. He is the third player this season aged 27 or older to reach the 20-goal mark for the first time in his NHL career. The others: Alex Killorn, 30, of the Tampa Bay Lightning (20 goals in 47 games) and Bryan Rust, 27, of the Pittsburgh Penguins (21 goals in 36 games).

Mike Reilly, Mark Borowiecki and Nikita Zaitsev each scored in the third period. It was the third time since the Senators entered the NHL in 1992 that three different defensemen each scored in one period. The others: Feb. 7, 2008 and Oct. 22, 2009.
