Shane Doan propels Coyotes to win

RALEIGH, N.C. --Jordan Martinook scored in the third period, and Shane Doan had a goal and two assists to lift the Arizona Coyotes to a 4-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Friday.
Martinook gave the Coyotes at 3-2 lead at 9:02. Doan intercepted a Ryan Murphy pass behind the Carolina net and quickly hit Martinook, who scored from the slot.

"Typical Doan, going in hard on the forecheck, somehow it bounces off him and gets on his stick," Martinook said. "Then he throws it out in front, the seas parted and I got one in."
Doan scored a power-play goal into an empty net with 59 seconds remaining for his first three-point night of the season.
"Everybody wants to contribute offensively and I haven't done a very good job for the most part this whole year," said Doan, who has 23 points (six goals, 17 assists). "When you're able to, it always feels better. I wish I had done it more often."
Louis Domingue made 32 saves for the Coyotes (23-34-7), who ended a two-game losing streak.

The Hurricanes (25-26-10) are winless in their past four games (0-2-2).
Christian Dvorak's 11th goal gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 11:34 of the first period. Doan gathered the long rebound from a Carolina shot and skated up ice before making a long, backhand pass to Dvorak in the right circle.
The Coyotes made it 2-0 when Alex Goligoski scored at 17:29. Goligoski took Radim Vrbata's pass on the backhand before moving to his forehand and flipping a shot past Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward. Ward made 18 saves.
"We started on our heels a bit, and they had a few chances," Domingue said. "The fact that they didn't score and we did on our chances kind of shifted the momentum away."
Carolina cut the deficit to 2-1 when Lee Stempniak got a piece of Jaccob Slavin's point shot at 19:11. Jay McClement, playing in his 900th NHL game, earned the second assist when he won the draw.
Jordan Staal tied the game 2-2 at 1:30 of the second period. Teuvo Teravainen passed across the slot to find Staal open at the far post for a tap-in.
The Hurricanes had a chance to take control of the game early, but Phil Di Giuseppe hit a post and Elias Lindholm missed an open net on the forehand.
"We chased the game," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. "We never scored early on some good chances. We never led."

Martinook skated into the slot, got his left knee down and lifted a shot over Ward's blocker.

Ward made a game-saver at 7:02 of the third period when he used his glove and a two-pad stack to fight off Vrbata's attempt at the bottom of the right circle.

Dvorak's goal was the result of Doan's hard work. The captain's pin-point, cross-ice, backhand pass was right on target.

In addition to scoring a goal, Dvorak had three blocked shots, two hits and won 12 of 21 faceoffs (57 percent).
