The New York Islanders were shut out 4-0 by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night, the third time in five games the Isles were blanked by their opponent.
Sergei Bobrovsky pitched a 26-save shutout, while Ryan Dzingel, Artemi Panarin, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson scored for Columbus (88 points), who picked up a crucial two points to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
For the Isles (95 points), Tuesday's loss dropped them from second in the Metropolitan Division to third, as the Pittsburgh Penguins (95 points) hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. With Washington's 4-1 win in Carolina, the Isles currently sit three points back of the division lead with five games to play.
BOXSCORE

BOBROVSKY BLANKS ISLES:

In the last two meetings, Thomas Greiss had a spell over the Columbus Blue Jackets. On Tuesday, it was Sergei Bobrovsky's turn.
Bobrovsky stopped all 26 shots to record his second shutout in as many games, keeping the Isles at bay while the Blue Jackets nursed a 1-0 lead through the first and second periods. Perhaps Bobrovsky's best save came in the second period, denying Casey Cizikas' breakaway chance and stopping the Isles from gaining some offensive momentum.
With Bobrovsky on his game, Dzingel's early power-play goal - which came off a too many men call on the Isles - held up as the eventual winner. Dzingel beat Greiss (29 saves) with a far side wrister at 5:43, ending Greiss' shutout streak vs Columbus at 157:10.
The Blue Jackets played a stingy game with the lead, leaving the Islanders without much time or space in the close-checking affair. Panarin beat Greiss with a low snap shot on a breakaway to make it 2-0 at 2:38 of the third period, forcing the Isles to open up and take chances the rest of the way.
"We really needed that first one, to get that first one by him," captain Anders Lee said. "I think it would have led to at least one more. We're pressing there to get the second one, then you have a two-goal deficit with 14 minutes left and you have to make some pushes and be a bit more risky. Unfortunately, it didn't pay off."
Bjorkstrand made it 3-0, beating Greiss with a wrister from the slot after a failed clear with 8:46 to play, while Atkinson iced the game with an empty-netter with 26.5 seconds remaining.
"It was a playoff game," Trotz said. "Plain and simple that's what it was. The last two games we've played have been playoff games. There's not a lot of room and you have to create it. If we find the back of the net early there it might be different, but it wasn't. We were in it really until they got the third goal."

DAL COLLE DRAWS IN FOR LADD:

With Andrew Ladd out, Michael Dal Colle had the first crack at taking his place, drawing into the lineup for the first time since March 9.
Dal Colle slotted in alongside Josh Bailey and Brock Nelson, playing 15:09 TOI with three shots. Trotz said he thought Dal Colle played well in his first game back, utilizing his size and playing with poise.

NEXT GAME:

The Islanders wrap up a two-game road trip on Thursday night in Winnipeg. Puck drop is at 8 p.m. eastern.
