The New York Islanders held an optional practice at Northwell Health Ice Center on Friday, one day after dropping their season opener to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3.

The optional skate was well-attended, with only Kyle Palmieri, Casey Cizikas and Ilya Sorokin not joining the group on the ice.

With practice being optional - and Head Coach Patrick Roy watching from above - the Islanders did not run through line combinations.

ENGVALL, RITCHIE AND VARLAMOV SKATE BEFORE PRACTICE

Pierre Engvall, Calum Ritchie and Semyon Varlamov skated before the team's optional skate. Varlamov took shots from Islanders Goaltending Coach Piero Greco, while Engvall and Ritchie worked at the other end of the ice. There were no updates provided on the three injured Islanders during Roy's media availability.

DROUIN TO HAVE LEAGUE HEARING

Jonathan Drouin has been suspected for one game for cross-checking Pittsburgh's Connor Dewar with 15 seconds to play in the third period of Thursday's game, the NHL's Player Safety Department announced on Friday afternoon.

The forward was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct.
