Tom Kuhnhackl was placed on long term injured reserve and loaned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Thursday morning.
Kuhnhackl suffered a lower-body injury on Oct. 25 against the Ottawa Senators, crashing into the end boards during a one-on-one battle with Dylan DeMelo. The Islanders forward recently re-joined the team for practice on Nov. 29, but the move is designed to get Kuhnhackl some game reps before putting him back in the Islanders lineup.
"The injury he's had, you need to get there and play and he's missed a lot of time," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "He's played seven or eight games this year. He just needs to go down there and play and rehab. He's done it through conditioning and rehab and now he has to get his feet under himself. Hopefully he gets back here and practices and we'll go from there."
The Sound Tigers play three games this weekend, visiting Utica on Friday, Syracuse on Saturday and returning home to play Utica on Monday.
