For the second straight year, New York Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier is hosting his Spike for Alz charity Spikeball tournament. The event, which will take place on July 13 in Montreal, aims to raise money for Alzheimer's research. All proceeds from the event will be directly donated to the cause.
Alzheimer's hits close to home for the Isles' 21-year-old winger. In January 2018, Beauvillier lost his grandfather Jean Cardin to the disease. The loss was devastating for Beauvillier and his family but compelled the Sorel-Tracy native to use his platform as a professional hockey player to create awareness and help support the efforts in finding a cure for Alzheimer's.

"I always wanted to do something for this cause]," Beauvillier said. "I knew it was coming. I thought it was a good idea to use my platform to raise money for Alzheimer's. I thought [Spikeball] was a great event and a great sport to use it for [a fundraiser]. I wanted to do something different. I didn't want to do a golf tournament or something like that. I wanted to create a different kind of atmosphere."
In its debut, Beauvillier's Spike for Alz event amassed over $10K worth of donations. He is hopeful that this year's outcome will surpass last year's results.

"Last year was super fun and we were just seeing where things were at," Beauvillier said. "It was a small, nice little tournament with family and friends. We even had some fans there. Everyone really liked it and enjoyed it so, we're like, 'Let's go for a second year.' This year is going to turn out pretty great. We're looking for sponsors and just want to continue to get bigger and bigger. The amount of money we raise this year will be twice or even three times more, hopefully."
Part of the event's growth includes the notable attendees. In addition to Beauvillier, four NHL players - including Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard and Ottawa Senators forward Anthony Duclair - will be in attendance, and even more NHL and AHL players are expected to join.
The tournament will take place at Lower Canada College at 4090 Avenue Royal at 10 a.m. followed by lunch, raffles and mingling with the attendees.
