NextGen Showcase Preview - Flames vs. Oilers

At last, it's Game Day.

The Flames and Oilers are set to lock horns in a prospects showdown Monday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome in the second annual Next Gen Showcase, with puck drop slated for 6 p.m. MT.

Matvei Gridin headlines a Flames roster looking to start their preseason preparations on the front foot, while the Oilers are set to bring a roster to the 'Dome featuring former Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard.

Calgary's youngsters were put through the paces by Wranglers Head Coach Brett Sutter over the weekend; 24 players saw ice-time over two fast-paced sessions Saturday and Sunday, with tonight marking the first opportunity this fall for the Flames hopefuls to be evaluated in game action.

Local product Tyson Gross is expected to centre the top line, alongside Russians Matvei Gridin and Aydar Suniev. And after getting his first taste of NHL action with a six-game stint last spring, Gross is eager to get the new campaign underway.

"I think everyone's excited," he said Monday morning."It's been a long summer. I know everyone's put in a lot of work, so it kind of leads all up to this.

"I think everyone's pretty excited to get going and competing."

Sutter, meanwhile, is confident his group will get out of the gate with pace and energy, especially given tonight's contest is the first - and during this Prospects Camp, the only - opportunity for the players to strut their stuff in live action.

"I think that was the message, right from the opening meeting here, was separate yourself early," Sutter said Monday. "And this is a great opportunity for these young guys to do that. Live action tonight, against a team from just down the road. We know in this organization, doesn't matter what time of year, you want to beat them.

"I think these guys are ready. I think they've had a really good couple days. I thought they were sharper yesterday than we were in day one, so I think they're ready to go."

The Other Side

The Oilers entry in this year's NextGen Showcase centres around a trio of forwards looking to make an early impression for new Head Coach Mike Babcock. 

Isaac Howard and Josh Samanski combined for 53 NHL appearances a season ago, before representing the U.S.A. and Germany, respectively, at the 2026 IIHF World Championship. 

Quinn Hutson enters the Next Gen Showcase pushing for an NHL spot, too, after leading AHL Bakersfield a season ago with 30 goals.

Howard told reporters last week he is optimistic about seizing an opening-night spot on the Oilers roster, especially given the fact fellow Edmonton forwards Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark aren't expected to be ready once the puck drops for real later this month.

"I think I definitely can and I don’t have to overthink it or do anything like that,” Howard said Friday. “I just have to come ready, play hard, compete hard and just showcase myself.” 

Watch, too, for truculent forward Connor Clattenburg, who drew rave reviews in the Alberta capital over a five-game stint last season. He compiled 131 penalty minutes in just 32 AHL games in 2025-26.

Player To Watch

Monday's contest serves as the unofficial kick-off for Gridin's sophomore pro campaign and after a rookie season that saw the young Russian collect 20 points (6G, 14A) in 37 NHL games, the excitement over his potential is palpable.

This evening, he'll be counted upon to lead the way for a Calgary squad that features five players with NHL experience. 

And he seems to shine, too, every time he squares off against the Oilers. Gridin scored his first NHL goal at Rogers Place in Edmonton (in his NHL debut, no less), and this past February, he recorded his first career multi-point game in a Battle of Alberta at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
