The Calgary Flames have announced the signing of defenceman Axel Hurtig to a three-year entry-level level contact.

Hurtig, a native of Högås, Sweden, captained the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen for the 2025-26 season, posting a career-best 19 points from six goals and 13 assists along with 46 penalty minutes through 64 contests. The Hitmen are currently in the first round of the WHL Playoffs, with Hurtig recording a goal and two assists through three games, helping Calgary hold a 3-0 series lead. 

Last season, Hurtig would appear in 11 playoff contests for the Hitmen, after a regular season where he totaled 16 points in 55 outings, as well as represent Sweden at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He was the Flames seventh-round selection (208th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft.
