The 1993-94 NHL season was the rookie year for goaltender Martin Brodeur, the beginning of his Hall of Fame career. On this day in 1994, he began the foundation of one of his many playoff records.

Against the visiting Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Brodeur backstopped New Jersey to a 2-0 win in Game 5. It marked the first career playoff shutout for Brodeur, who received the offensive support from Bob Carpenter, who scored a goal and as assist and Corey Millen who opened the scoring early in the second period.

Brodeur made 22 saves for the shutout victory and would lead New Jersey to a series win in six games.

May 9, 2001

On May 9, 2001 the New Jersey Devils walked into their East Rutherford arena to host the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Devils were without Scott Niedermeyer, missing for three straight games after an elbow from Toronto's Tie Domi put Niedermeyer out of the series with a concussion.

New Jersey were once down 3-2 in the series and here they were in a Game 7 matchup, in front of their fans.

The Devils entered the second period down 1-0 to Toronto.

In the second period, Patrik Elias, well, he Patrik Elias'd.

He scored two goals in the span of 1:59, as the team exploded with a four-goal second period.

"I wish I could say I was saving it for this game, but I wasn't," Elias said at the time. "I want to score every game, but I didn't. I'm just glad they went in at the right time."

Scott Stevens and John Madden also scored for New Jersey who eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs from the post-season with a 5-1 Game 7 victory.
