It was around 2 o'clock in the morning in Slovakia, but that didn't matter.
Simon Nemec picked up his cell phone to call his mother.
The 18-year-old defenseman was just selected second overall in the NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils and he wanted to speak to his mom.
In Montreal with the newest member of the Devils were his father and one of his brothers, but his mother is back in Slovakia staying behind to remain at home with Nemec's younger brother. The mother and son shared a quick phone call before all the commotion of media obligations.
"She's really happy because this is now, really living our dream," he said his face filled with emotion. "This is now really living our dream and when I was a kid I was always worried about (being drafted to) the NHL and now, now it's a step."
The phone call was short, but not much needed to be said to convey the magnitude of the moment, the two perhaps thinking the phone call would come a little earlier in the Slovakian morning.
"Big surprise," Nemec said, "Because everybody said I will be five, six, or seven."
The measure of the moment set in between the two, realizing it wasn't five, six, or seven but two.
What did his mom say?
"Nothing, she had no words. Like me."
