Here are some observations from the game...
- It was Robby Fabbri's first game of the season after tearing his ACL back in September.
- Devils had a great chance midway through the first period with the puck laying in the Detroit crease in front of a bunch of skaters and goaltender Ville Husso. Nico Hischier tried to get a stick on the loose puck but it was cleared out of harm's way before he could.
- Hischier's hand injury was troubling him and resulted in him not taking any draws in the first half of the game. The first two face-offs for his line were taken by Tomas Tatar, who went 0-2. Dawson Mercer then swapped onto that line with Tatar to take face-offs. Tatar moved over with Jack Hughes and Erik Haula.
Hischier's first face-off of the game came with the Devils on the power play and it was a huge one. He won the draw over to Jack Hughes who fed Dougie Hamilton for his goal to make it a 1-0 game. He only took six draws on the night, but won four.
"I felt good enough to be out there but definitely tried not to take too many face-offs, stuff like that," said Hischier. "Just trying to help the team on the wing as well, I think it was my first game as a winger," he chuckled.
"In my mind, I just wanted to reduce the face-offs. On the power play unit I'm going to grind it out there and take those draws and it came up good. Lucky it was good enough to win some draws for the team there. Overall, just happy for the game and the two points tonight."
- Damon Severson had 10:26 of ice time in the first period to lead all skaters by far. He finished with 23:30
- Michael McLeod had a really strong game, the 200th of his NHL career. In addition to his goal, he was 52% in the face-off dot. The draw performance was strongly needed by the Devils, who as a team were only 39% on face-offs.
"Same as usual, just a little more face-offs and more defensive zone starts," said McLeod. "Everyone kind of played well defensively and we tried to minimize their chances and get on the offense.
McLeod also talked about helping with the secondary scoring.
"It's great to chip in and see the other guys chip in like that. Everyone's working on their offense in practice so it's good to have a game like that."
McLeod added that he knew it was his 200th career game.
"Pretty happy about it," he said. "It's awesome. I just want to keep going and keep getting better. I love this organization. It's been awesome."
- It was the fourth straight game where Hischier scored a goal.
"I just try to help wherever I can for the team," he said, modestly. "Scoring goals is a good thing, too. It gives myself some confidence but on the other hand, got the two points."
