If hockey players and staff think they live their lives on the road, it pales in comparison to what they're all chasing.
The Stanley Cup is on the road for 200-plus days a year, Mike Bolt, one of the Keepers of the Cup shared this week on the Speak of the Devils Podcast. And one of those days on the road was right here in New Jersey for the USA Hockey Sled Classic presented by the NHL late last month. Mike was kind enough, before attending the event, to bring the Cup to Prudential Center for an informative sit-down where he and Amanda Stein delve into all kind of stories that follows this century-old trophy.
What makes being in the Stanley Cup's presence so remarkable is the history that it carries and it's right there for you to see. And on top of that, it is the most unique of all major sports trophies because there is just one. A Stanley Cup isn't made every year. Other sports just don't compare.
"First of all, those trophies are brand new every year," Bolt shared, "there are a multiple of them, for the team to get a couple of them. You don't get your name on it, or if you do it's just that teams name, it's not the history
"Some of the guys look at it and say, my name gets to be next to Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and you sit there and name drop all of them," Bolt continued, "Guys are like my name is next to those guys, that's awesome. And 128 years of history on here is pretty cool."
And it's pretty cool to hear all the stories from Mike, who knows not just this history of the Cup, but has been with it on its many adventures for over 21 years, many of which he shares this week on the Speak of the Devils podcast.
