PRE-GAME STORY
NEWARK, NJ. - As the Devils take on the Rangers for their first game of the year, it'll be another strong test for New Jersey who has completely turned things around through the first quarter of the season.
New Jersey will be without forward Nathan Bastian who was injured in Saturday's game against the Capitals. Bastian did not participate in morning skate.
"Further evaluation today and we know he's going to be out for a little bit so we'll get a timeline," Ruff said on Bastian.
Holtz Returns:
Monday, the Devils recalled Alexander Holtz from Utica to come into the lineup against the Rangers. For Ruff and the Devils coaching staff they want to see Holtz's improvements on the areas they've zoned in on.
"The things that we worked hard on, (like) pace of play," Ruff said on what he hopes to see in Holtz's return to the lineup. "We know he has a great shooting skill so we'll use him on our second power play, and the ability to make some plays. So we're just hoping that he gained some confidence down there, feels good after playing three games, and he can help us offensively, but at the same time has to play well away from the puck."
During his return to the AHL, Holtz had two goals and two assists through three games, including the game winning goal in overtime on Saturday.
"I think it was important. Nice to get some games in, get some playing time. It was a fun trip and we had a good run down there," Holtz said on going down to the Utica Comets for three games. "I just played my game down there, played with speed. The first game was kind of hard, I hadn't played in a month. I feel better and better and my third game was my best one."
The Devils went fifteen straight games without changing their lineup, a new franchise record. Holtz's last game played was Oct. 25, so when he returned to Comets, it was an opportunity for him to get some minutes.
"It's been difficult, I haven't played for a long time and you're sitting out there. But I love the (team) doing well, so just want to be a part of that, and just continue with it," said Holtz on the last month. "When you don't play you want to work on certain things. It was nice (to work with skating coach Dawn Braid), work on my skating a little bit. I've been working with (Assistant Coach Sergei Brylin), and all of the coaching staff (Ryan) Murphy, almost everyone.
"(With Brylin), it's a lot of turns stuff, puck protection, a lot of board work. A lot of work with him."
In addition to getting his first game in a month, the quick return to Utica helped Holtz with another big part of his game.
"It improves your confidence, I think confidence is a huge part for my game," Holtz said. "It's always nice to get some goals in, have a little bit of success down there too."
"I think it was good for him to go down and play some games, I heard he was doing well down there," Bratt said on Holtz's recall. "He was scoring goals and feeling good about his game and I think that's the way he has to continue playing up here. Play with his high pace, and try to settle in with the group and playing as a team. The defensive zone, that's where we win the games so far. That's the commitment we need to have. He's a good kid and he's going to learn, and it'll be good to have him back."
Facing the Rivals:
Any time any rivals face off, it's going to be a physical, aggressive game. The Devils are the more successful team heading into today's matchup, but that doesn't mean anything when it's puck drop.
"I think they're always going to be a tough game, rivalry games are always tough," Bratt said about the Rangers. "When it's a rivalry game you step up. We have a good test ahead of us today, we had a good morning skate, we have a good feeling from last game, and we're ready to go tonight."
In the Rangers last game on Saturday, they conceded four goals in the third period to lost 4-3 to the Oilers. New York's head coach Gerard Gallant had tough words for his team following that game, which will be something they try to fight against in tonight's contest.
"They've got a lot of good players, their goaltending is great, so it's one of those games that got away from them," Ruff said about the Rangers last game. "After a game like that I would really expect to see their best."
"We know we're going to get their A game," said Erik Haula following morning skate. "I'm sure they're not happy with how things have gone lately, and they're a really good team. We got to be ready for that. The preparation started already, it's a rivalry game so we'll be ready to go."
What are the areas the Devils are focused on against New York?
"Their top lines, their power play, we got to make sure that attention to detail (is there), we're not taking undisciplined penalties because they've thrived off that," said Ruff pre-game. "I think at the same time it's a willingness to get yourself around (Shesterkin) who I think is one of the best in the league when he sees the puck. We're going to have to make sure we provide some flash screens, we get second opportunities, and we make him fight to see pucks.
What's Working:
With a 18-4-0 record, the Devils have clearly improved from last season where it took them until early January to pick up those 34 points. For returning forward Jesper Bratt, Saturday's 5-1 win over the Capitals showed some growth with holding a lead.
"I think especially the way we showed character. Coming into a lead in the third period was something we were previously struggling with, and something we've been growing on this season," Bratt said pre-game. "Those uncomfortable situations is somewhere where we get comfortable now, we strive."
In addition to holding on to a lead, the Devils are standing strong against the tests they've had this season. In addition to putting together consistently good performances every game, the Devils are breaking it up to a smaller battle to face.
"We feel comfortable now. We've been tested a lot of nights early on, we have a lot of tough games to play, we've been coming out ready to play," said Bratt. "We've been coming out ready to play, we take it shift-by-shift. We've been a full 20 man roster every night … we want to win more games, we want to play meaningful games."
PREVIEW
DEVILS (18-4-0) at RANGERS (10-8-4)
TV: 7:00 p.m. ET; Televised on MSGSN and NHL Network (outside Devils region)
Head-to-Head
This is the first of four meetings between the Hudson River rivals and first at MSG. The Devils will cross the Hudson River again on Dec. 12, before hosting the Rangers on Jan. 7 and Mar. 30.
Last season the Devils lost three of the four meetings: a 4-3 shootout loss on Nov. 14, a 3-1 loss at MSG on Mar. 4, and the series finale on Apr. 5 at home, 3-1. The Devils lone win was the first meeting at Prudential Center where New Jersey won 7-4.
The last time the Devils won a season series against their rivals was during the 2017-18 campaign, picking up three wins.
Devils team scope:
New Jersey is on a two-game win streak after winning both legs of a back-to-back that started on Friday in Buffalo and ended at home against the Capitals. During those two wins, the Devils only conceded one goal against in each contest while putting up eight total goals. The Devils are truly on a roll, winning 12 of their 13 games this month and finding scoring from all lines. Center Jack Hughes is off to a strong fourth NHL season as the 21 year old scored his first career hat trick on Saturday. Hughes leads the Devils with goals, 11, and is tied with Captain Nico Hischier for second with 14 assists. Hughes and Forward Jesper Bratt share the team lead for points with 25. Bratt also leads the Devils with 17 assists.
The Devils goaltending remains strong as Vitek Vanecek is 10-2-0 with a 2.05 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. Vanecek was key in the Devils 5-1 victory over the Capitals, as the Devils netminder stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced, including all eight of Alex Ovechkin's shots. Akira Schmid, who has backed up Vanecek this month, has played at a high level in all of his games, going 4-0-0 to start the year. Schmid has a 1.24 goals against average and a .953 save percentage.
On Monday morning, the Devils announced the recalls of defenseman Kevin Bahl, forward Alexander Holtz, and goaltender Nico Daws. Daws was called up due to Schmid being sick on Monday. The recall of Holtz is likely due to forward Nathan Bastian's injury he sustained in Saturday's game against the Capitals. The Devils haven't announced any updates to Bastian except it is an upper-body injury.
The Devils statistically are very strong, as they are first in goals against per game limiting their opponents to an average of 2.18 a game, third in goals scored a game with 3.73, seventh in face-offs and penalty kill.
Rangers team scope:
The Rangers are 4-4-2 in their last ten games and most recently have dropped their last two contests. In Saturday's game against the Oilers, New York allowed four unanswered goals in the third period which led to their 4-3 loss. The Rangers are still looking for more consistency with wins as the team's longest win streak this season is three games. Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad lead the Rangers with 10 goals each. Artemi Panarin's 19 assists are most on the Rangers, while Panarian and Adam Fox are tied for the team lead with 24 points. Igor Shesterkin is 10-3-3 through 16 starts where the goaltender has a 2.49 goals against average and .914 save percentage. Jaroslav Halak is 0-5-1 to start the year with a 3.20 goals against and a .881 save percentage.
Adam Fox is a player to watch as he has 12 points in his last eight games, three of which have been goals. The defenseman is the third blue liner in franchise history to have 24 or more points throughout the first 22 games of a season. Another to watch is Mika Zibanejad who has five points in his last six games (1G, 4A) and he is second in the league with seven power play goals. The Rangers power play is 18th in the league scoring 21.3% of the time.
Monday's game is the first of four games in six nights for the Rangers who head to Ottawa Wednesday before hosting a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday. This is also the first of two meetings in two weeks between the Hudson River Rivals. Monday's contest is Hockey Fights Cancer night at MSG.
By the numbers:
The Rangers have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the Devils, going back to Mar. 4, 2021. In addition, New York has won their last four games against New Jersey when played at MSG.
Jack Hughes' hat trick was the 13th natural hat trick in franchise history and first since Brian Boyle's on Nov. 5, 2018. It was also the first natural hat trick of the 2022-23 season. Hughes also is the youngest player in franchise history to score a natural hat trick.
