PRE-GAME STORY

CHICAGO, IL - The Devils are playing in Chicago on the second half of back-to-back nights. And considering the performance by goaltender Nico Daws in last night's game, 37 saves on 38 shots in a 6-1 win at Pittsburgh, it would be tempting for head coach Lindy Ruff to go back to him.
"Any time a goaltender plays that well it's easy to throw him back in between the pipes and let him play another game," Ruff said.
Of course, Ruff wasn't about to reveal his starter.
"We have a plan in place. We know we have back-to-back games," Ruff said. "Sometimes the plan changes based on how a goaltender is playing. I know that Jon (Gilies) has played a lot of games for us. He played some really good games. So inside of all that, now that Nico has stepped in and played well it gives us an opportunity to use both guys."
Road Success
The Devils have won three consecutive road games: Montreal, 7-1; St. Louis, 7-4; Pittsburgh, 6-1. In those three games they've totaled 20 goals. And that's the reason for their recent road success.
"Offensively we've scored goals," Ruff said. "When you don't capitalize on your opportunities you don't win hockey games. If you look at the opportunities we had really early in the Pittsburgh game. … three of the first four opportunities we got in the game we put in the back of the net. Once you start doing that you can make it really hard on the opposition."
If the Devils win at Chicago, it would be their first four-game road winning streak since Feb. 13-27, 2018.
100
Tonight, forward Yegor Sharangovich will be playing in his 100th career game. He enjoyed a 16-goal outburst in his 54-game rookie campaign last year. This season, he was slower to start, but has compiled 11 goals through 45 games on the year.
"First, he's learned how hard this league is," Ruff said of Sharangovich. "He got off to a great start last year and he continued that through most of that shortened season. This year he got off to a tough start and had to grind his way through it, now he's back to where he was playing last year."
Hawks
The Devils will be facing the Chicago Blackhawks. And Ruff offered a scouting report:
"They're going to play hard. They play real aggressive offensively, a lot of motion in the offensive zone. They create a lot of indecision for a defensive team if you get standing around. If we don't kill the play early. A lot of motion inside the zone. They're a team that plays hard. It's a game where you can get rewarded. There's risk there we should be able to create situations on the rush that if we capitalize, we should get some chances."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head
The Blackhawks and Devils last played at the start of the season at Prudential Center when Jack Hughes scored in overtime to give the home side a 4-3 win.
Prior to that, they played twice in the 2019-20 season. Chicago won once in a shootout and the last time the Devils played at United Center, they won 7-1 on December 23, 2019.
Devils team scope:
After a lengthy break, the Devils showed no rust in their return to action on Thursday in Pittsburgh with three goals in the opening 6:16 of the game on their way to a 6-1 win against the Penguins.
With the win, the Devils moved past Philadelphia out of last place in the Metropolitan Division. They sit four points behind the Islanders.
Jesper Bratt had two goals in his return to action and now has 14 on the season, tied with Jack Hughes for the team lead.
Blackhawks team scope:
The Blackhawks are coming off a four-day layoff. Heading into that break, they had lost three straight games to Columbus, Dallas and Florida. Overall, the Blackhawks have only two wins in their last nine games (2-6-1).
Patrick Kane leads the Blackhawks in scoring with 49 points in 48 games. The team's leading goal scorer is Alex Debrincat, who has 29 goals in 52 contests.
By the Numbers:
With 14 goals, Bratt is two goals shy of his career high of 16, set in 2019-20 in 46 games. He already has his career high in points with 43 in only 45 games.
Nico Hischier is New Jersey's leading scorer in the month of February with six goals and nine points in seven games. He's tied with Yegor Sharangovich (three goals, six assists).
