PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ. - "The vibes in the room right now are great," said Devils forward Miles Wood. "When you win, it makes hockey a lot more fun. Three in the row is a great start, and we're trying to search for the fourth one tonight."
The Devils are riding high following three straight victories but they face a tough task tonight in the Washington Capitals, a team that has traditionally given them fits.
The results have completely changed from the first two games of 2022-23 but head Coach Lindy Ruff doesn't think much is different about their games.
"I don't think a lot has changed," he said. "You know, maybe the fact that we're playing 11 forwards. The number of chances we're creating is about the same and the number we've given up is about the same. We're converting, and we've cleaned up some of the mistakes we've made inside the game."
11/7
A key to the Devils success may be their decision to continue running 11 forwards and seven defensemen. It has allowed them to double shift their star forwards and roll three potent lines quite a bit, while keeping their D fresh. The fourth line gets a healthy rotation of the other wing.
"I think it's probably weirder for the other guy more than me and Mikey," forward Nathan Bastian said of the process. "I think we stick to our guns and play a lot simpler. So the other guys, whether it's Palat or Jack, whoever steps in with us, I think they may be used to making a couple more plays in maybe more high danger areas and when they come play with me and Mikey, I think it's a little more of a simple game."
Judging by the lineup at morning skate, the Devils will continue to deploy the 11/7.

PK SUCCESS
The Devils currently have the fifth-best kill in the NHL (93.3%). Why has it been so successful?
"Could be a number of things," said Bastian. "I think every kill, you kind of see different parts doing well. Whether that's the goalie or the D, or our up-ice pressure. I think there have been a number of reasons why it's kind of been clicking all at the same time."
"I think we're getting timely saves," said Ruff. "And I think you need timely saves when you're killing penalties. At the same time, I think we've got guys that are adjusting to killing a little bit different than we did last year. And maybe some of those mistakes were based on that. But, overall, if you can limit the other teams to maybe one chance or one better opportunity to kill, and if you win the puck battles and get it down the ice, which I think we're getting better at, it helps kill a lot of power plays."
