FINLAND 3, CANADA 2
Canada: Owen Power
Just as it looked like the Canadians had a win and a quarterfinal berth locked up, Finland forced overtime and then rallied in a shootout to beat the Canadians, 3-2. Brandon Pirri opened the scoring in the first period, getting Canada on the board first. Arttu Ruotsalainen scored in the second period to tie the game, however Maxime Comtois gave Canada a 2-1 lead eight minutes into the middle frame. In the final five minuets of regulation, Arttu Ruotsalainen scored his second of the contest to force extra time.
Neither team was able to score in the overtime, and the game went to a shootout. Brandon Pirri and former Devil Adam Henrique scored for Canada in the shootout, however, Finland saw Oliwer Kaski, Saku Maenalanen and Arttu Ruotsalainen convert to win the game.
Top prospect Owen Power played just over 22 minutes during the game and had one shot on goal. Canada had a 34-31 shot advantage in the contest.
Finland already locked up a spot in the quarterfinals ahead of the game, but had to wait for the USA vs. Italy result to know if they would be first or second in Group B. With the U.S. securing a 4-2 victory over Italy, Finland is Group B's number two seed going into the knockout round. They will play Czech Republic.
After losing a few games to start the tournament, Canada's fate for going to the quarterfinals hung in the balance of the Latvia - Germany game. The red and white needed the contest to be decided in regulation time to advance. Luckily for Canada, Germany held on to win 2-1 giving the Canadians a chance to overcome a slow start to the tournament in the knockout rounds. The red and white will face the ROC in Thursday's quarterfinal. ROC is the top seed in Group A, while Canada is the fourth seed in Group B.
SWITZERLAND 6, GREAT BRITAIN 3
Switzerland: Nico Hischier, Jonas Siegenthaler
Devils Captain Nico Hischier contributed two points, while Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler added one of his own to help Switzerland beat Great Britain 6-3, in Switzerland's final group stage game.
The Swiss came away with the win after scoring four straight in the second period to take a dominating lead. Hischier assisted on Santeri Alatalo's goal which started the succession of tallies by the Swiss. Hischier then had the sixth and final goal late in the second period. Siegenthaler assisted on Switzerland's second goal in the first period.
Hischier played 16 minutes in the contest, while Siegenthaler was out there for 21 minutes and 19 seconds. The Swiss outshot the Brits 53-26 in the contest, with Devils players contributing for eight of those shots.
Switzerland finishes second in Group A's standings and will face Germany in the quarterfinals. Great Britain finishes the group stage seventh in the standings for Group A.
CZECH REPUBLIC 7, SLOVAKIA 3
Slovakia: Marian Studenic
The Czech Republic got on the board in the first minute of its game against Slovakia and never looked back, winning 7-3. The Czechs had at least a three goal lead throughout the game and its biggest advantage against the Slovaks was by five goals in the third period.
Devils forward Marian Student played 16 minutes and 48 seconds with an average shift length of 45 seconds. He registered one shot on goal in the loss.
Both the Czech Republic and Slovakia will advance to the knockout round as these countries finished third and fourth respectively in Group A. Czech Republic faces Finland while Slovakia squares off against the United States. Studenic (CZE) will face Devils teammate Tennyson (USA) on Thursday.
UNITED STATES 4, ITALY 2
United States: Matt Tennyson, Matt Hellickson
With a 4-2 win over Italy, the United States finished the group stage as the number one seed for Group B. Kevin Labanc and Conor Garland each had two goals to lead the Americans to victory. Luca Frigo and Stefano Giliati had the goals for Italy.
Devils defenseman Matt Tennyson assisted on the game winning goal with 15 seconds left in the first period. Tennyson finished the game with three shots on net, and 17:18 of ice time. Hellickson did not play for the U.S. against Italy.
Top prospect Matty Beniers only saw 12 and a half minutes of ice time but left his mark. Beniers had one assist, and a plus-two rating through the 13 shifts he played. He averaged 58 seconds for shift length in the contest.
The United States will play Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
ROC (RUSSIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE) 6, BELARUS 0
Belarus: Yegor Sharangovich
The ROC team was too much to handle for Belarus, as the Russian team blanked their opponent 6-0 for the final game of the group stage at Men's Worlds. The win for the Russian athletes gives them the top seed in Group A and a date with Canada in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Nikita Nesterov had two goals for ROC and all but one of the team's tallies came in the first period. ROC outshot Belarus 32-19.
Devils forward Yegor Sharangovich played just under 21 minutes in the loss and had two shots on goal. Belarus finished last in Group A and will not advance to the knockout round.
