BROSSARD – Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Tuesday that the team has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension (2027-28 to 2030-31) with forward Alex Newhook. The deal will pay him an average annual salary of $5.55 million.
Newhook played 42 games with the Canadiens in 2025-26, registering 13 goals and 12 assists. He also tallied two power-play goals and two game-winning goals. Since making his NHL debut in 2020-21, Newhook took part in 338 games with the Colorado Avalanche and the Canadiens, registering 151 points (70G, 81A). The St. John’s, NL native won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.
The 25-year-old forward produced 10 points (7G, 3A) in 19 playoff contests in 2026, leading the team in game-winning goals (2, tied with Alexandre Texier). Newhook scored the game winner in both Game 7s that led to the two series-clinching wins by the Canadiens last spring.
Newhook was selected in the first round (16th overall) by the Avalanche at the 2019 NHL Draft.
