BostonBruins.com - NHL trailblazer and Bruins legend Willie O'Ree will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto as a builder on Monday night. The Fredericton, New Brunswick, native made history on Jan. 18, 1958, when he took the ice for the Bruins and became the first black player in the history of the National Hockey League.
And since 1998, O'Ree, now 83, has served as the NHL's Director of Youth Development and NHL Diversity Ambassador, as he travels throughout North America in an attempt to grow the game of hockey.
O'Ree will enter the Hall on Monday with NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman, former Canadian women's team captain Jayna Hefford, Soviet star Aleksander Yakushev, and NHL legends Martin Brodeur and Martin St. Louis.
