BostonBruins.com - Charlie McAvoy is somewhat of a golf novice.
The Bruins blue liner has taken up the sport over the last few years and has quickly come to enjoy it. As such, his game is still growing, but that didn't stop him from jumping at a pretty unique opportunity.
McAvoy traveled to Florida late last week and caddied for childhood friend James Nicholas during the Orange County National Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour, the developmental wing of the PGA Tour. Nicholas, a 23-year-old rookie on the Korn Ferry, shot 68-70 (4-under) over the first two rounds, missing the cut by two strokes.

Nevertheless, it was a memorable couple of days for the duo from New York.
"It was so cool," McAvoy told PGATour.com's Kevin Prise. "I've gotten into golf fairly recently, a couple years ago. With cheering James on and starting to play a little bit myself, I've grown to like it, and it's a great sport. Today was just awesome. To be able to go out there, cheering him on and trying to support him when I can…it was awesome."

McAvoy and Nicholas surfed together as kids and eventually ended up on the same hockey team with the Westchester Express and Jr. Rangers. Nicholas' mom, Eileen, and McAvoy's father, Charlies, grew up together in Long Beach, New York.
"He's my biggest supporter out there," Nicholas, who attended Yale where he also played football, told Prise. "I made a mess of No. 3 and had about a 50-footer for par, and Charlie's like, 'This is easy. Let's go. Knock it in,' and I made it. It was a highlight of the day. He's been really positive, positive energy out there…he's done a great job."
With the Bruins' 2020-21 season pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, McAvoy was able to set aside a few days to hop on the bag of one of his oldest friends.
"For it to come full circle and have an opportunity to come together…he shot me a text, and I knew I had to come and support him," said McAvoy.
"At first it was a joke, and then I was like, 'Dude, let's go,'" added Nicholas. "It's awesome to share this experience with other people. He's one of my close friends, and he came out and supported me."
