The second - and final - meeting of the regular season between the Avalanche and Islanders required extra time and eventually, a shootout.
The Avalanche's patience paid off against the stingy Islanders as they had outshot them 44-26 in regulation.
Second and final meeting of the regular season - Isles had won previous meeting on Oct. 29 5-4 after mounting a full comeback despite trailing the Avalanche 3-0 in the second period
The Avalanche and Islanders skated out to a relatively uneventful and evenly matched 0-0 first period, where the Isles held an 11-10 edge in shots on goal.
The game took a similar theme in the second period - where Colorado's power play went 0-for-2 - but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Avalanche tested Sorokin with 15 shots compared to the seven shots the Islanders threw at Georgiev, but the stalwart contest remained 0-0 heading into the final frame of regulation.
In the third frame, the Avalanche outshot the Islanders 19-8.
With both team's netminders playing sharp, it was fitting that extra time and an eventual shootout would be required to determine a victor.
Colorado mostly dominated overtime and put up two shots and held the Islanders to none. In the extra five-minute period, Cale Makar fed J.T. Compher crossed the slot but Compher's shot wrung off the crossbar and Sorokin also denied a last-second chance from Makar as he was set up by Rantanen on the doorstep.
In the shootout, Georgiev denied Simon Holmstrom, Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier, while Rodrigues executed a nifty deke before tucking the puck past a sprawled out Sorokin for the shootout winner.
