MacDermid signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings as an undrafted free agent on Sept. 12, 2012.
MacDermid made his junior hockey debut with Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League in the 2011-12 season and started his pro career with Ontario of the American Hockey League in 2015-16, finishing with 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 56 games while emerging as a regular defenseman.

MacDermid signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Kings on July 14, 2017, and he made the opening night roster for the 2017-18 season. He scored his first NHL goal in a 4-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 26, 2017, and had four points (one goal, three assists) in 34 games, but ended the season in Ontario.
MacDermid signed his first one-way contract with the Kings on April 10, 2020. It was for two years. He signed a two-year, two-way contract July 15, 2018.
Kurtis' father, Paul MacDermid, played 690 NHL games with the Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets, Washington Capitals and Quebec Nordiques. His older brother, Lane MacDermid, played in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames.
