Cale Makar made the day of x youth hockey players on Sunday with a surprise appearance at the Avalanche’s Mile High Mites Lean to Play event. On the ice, Makar served as one of the coaches at the event, assisting the youth players with skating and skill drills.
On the ice, Makar was joined by former Avs Milan Hejduk, John-Michael Liles and Mark Rycroft, along with former NHLer Yan Stastny. Makar said he had a lot of interacting with the youth players and added that they keep the mood light.
“It’s cool,” Makar said. “Anything I can do to help kids enjoy [and] make the game of hockey fun at a young age, I think it’s super exciting for me and exciting for them, hopefully. So, I’m glad that I can be a part of it.”
This appearance by Makar is just another example of the Avalanche’s commitment to growing the game of hockey in Colorado, something the two-time James Norris Memorial Trophy said is important.
“I think just us as a team and as an entire organization, it’s a duty of ours to make sure that we’re having fun and doing the right things to show that hockey is a fun sport,” Makar said. “And it’s a really enjoyable sport especially at a young age, and it’s great for kids in every aspect. [It’s a] pleasure to be a part of it.”
