FINALEDM

Back in the win column.
The Colorado Avalanche snapped a five-game winless skid (0-4-1) as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit to complete a 3-2 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night at Rogers Place. The game marked the first time since the 2022 Western Conference Final that the two teams met, where the Avalanche won the series in four games and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final. Colorado is now 20-15-3 on the season.

For the Avalanche, Cale Makar (1G, 1A) buried the overtime winner as Nathan MacKinnon (1G, 1A) and Brad Hunt scored in regulation. Evan Rodrigues returned to the lineup after being sidelined for two games and recorded two assists. In net, Alexandar Georgiev turned aside 28 of the 30 shots that he faced.
For Edmonton, Zach Hyman scored twice on the power play. Leon Draisaitl handed out two assists. Between the pipes, Stuart Skinner made 43 saves on 46 shots.
THE COMEBACK:
Five-on-five the Avalanche were the better team - as they outshot Edmonton43-29 in regulation - but found themselves down to the Oilers - whose lethal power play converted to take a 2-0 lead - heading into the final period of regulation.
MacKinnon got the scoring started in the final 20 minutes of regulation as the Avalanche mounted the eventual comeback in overtime.

Colorado's power play started the third period with 1:44 time carried over. And while they didn't convert on the power play, they scored not long after with a highlight-worthy-goal from MacKinnon at 3:06.
Edmonton had entered Colorado's zone, but Cale Makar forced a turnover atop the right faceoff circle. Rodrigues quickly tapped the puck to MacKinnon, who carried it all the way into the Oilers' zone, stickhandled past Cody Ceci and Darnell Nurse before sending his shot over Skinner's glove to trim the Avalanche deficit down 2-1.
At 7:27, a pair of penalties were handed out as Devon Toews was called for hooking and Hyman was assessed with embellishment, resulting in four-on-four play for the following two minutes.
From along the boards near the left faceoff circle, Rodrigues pried the puck away and chipped it back into the high zone. Off the bench, Hunt skated into open space and wired a low wrist shot past the far side of Skinner to equalize the score 2-2 at 8:19 as he scored his first goal of the season and first goal as a member of the Avalanche.

In overtime, both sides exchanged coast-to-coast high-flying chances. The Oilers had generated two promising chances on a one-timer that Georgiev slid across to deny and a fluky play where the puck popped in the air and Hyman batted it on net, but the Avalanche netminder made the stop - and eventual secondary assist.
Colorado then countered the other way as MacKinnon sent the puck out to Makar in the neutral zone. The defenseman turned on the jets and skated into the left faceoff circle where he unleashed a high wrist shot past Skinner for the overtime winner at 2:09.

IN REGULATION:

Edmonton took a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission as they converted on a late power play chance that was their second of the game and period.
The Avalanche had dominated the opening frame as their offense largely controlled possession and created promising looks as they held a 15-7 shot edge. The Avalanche had killed off an early penalty (Matin Kaut hooking at 2:21) and while they didn't convert on their first of two - unsuccessful - power plays in the period at 9:34 as Draisaitl was called for hooking on J.T. Compher, but Colorado maintained momentum after that.
With just over five minutes left in the first period, the Artturi Lehkonen, Nathan MacKinnon, Rodrigues line put forth a dynamic shift, but Skinner denied MacKinnon twice on it. A backdoor chance by the Avalanche centerman hit off the post and Skinner poked the puck out of the crease with his stick and then on the same shift, gloved down a MacKinnon shot from the slot.
Then, at 14:47 Alex Newhook was whistled for interference and Edmonton's potent power play - which is atop the league standings with a 31.9% conversion rate - clicked to secure the game's icebreaker.
From the doorstep, Draisaitl threaded a pass across the seam to Connor McDavid, who centered the puck to the net front. From just outside the blue paint, Hyman put the feed past Georgiev's left pad at 15:37.
The Avalanche came out with a solid second-period effort, but a sequence of penalties in the latter half of the period proved costly as Edmonton's power play capitalized once again to double its lead 2-0 at 15:03.
The majority of the middle frame was low-event, until Samuel Girard took an interference penalty at 13:09. On the Oilers' third power play of the game, they generated a netfront scramble off as Tyson Barrie's point shot hit off the end boards and popped out to the near post. Georgiev made the stop, but was unable to secure the puck and - as a netfront scramble ensued - Hyman jammed the puck through Georgiev's pads.
The Avalanche challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but upon review, the goal was confirmed and thus, Colorado was sent back on the penalty kill at 15:03. The Avalanche then had to kill off 13 seconds of a 5-on-3 as Erik Johnson was sent to the box for tripping at 16:50.
Fortunately, the Avalanche's penalty kill came up with a strong effort to keep the deficit down to two goals.
In the last minute of the period, Mikko Rantanen rang a shot off the crossbar and the Avalanche received their third power play of the game with 17 seconds left in the second period.
Late in the third period, the Avalanche received their fourth power play of the game as Draisaitl elbowed Darren Helm, but Colorado's power play didn't capitalize and subsequently went 0-for-4 on the night.
