Victor Olofsson scored in his return to the lineup, but the Buffalo Sabres fell 2-1 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs inside Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday.

Auston Matthews scored the winning goal for Toronto with 39.2 seconds remaining in overtime. William Nylander also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Olofsson entered the lineup in place of Casey Mittelstadt, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche prior to the game in exchange for defenseman Bowen Byram. He scored his fifth goal of the season to erase a 1-0 deficit during the second period.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen started for the 20th time in Buffalo’s last 22 games and made 25 saves. Ilya Samsonov made 23 saves for Toronto.

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring after a quiet first period that saw the two teams combine for just five scoring chances, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Nylander buried a wrist shot from the slot following a quick series of passes from Bertuzzi and Domi.

Period 2, 6:31 – Victor Olofsson from Zemgus Girgensons (1-1)

Girgensons chopped the puck from along the boards in the Buffalo zone into neutral ice, where Olofsson was able to pick it up and carry it on the rush down the left side. Olofsson took his shot from the top of the faceoff circle, picking the far-side corner.

The Sabres finished the period with a 23-14 edge in shot attempts.

OT, 4:20 – Auston Matthews from Mitchell Marner and William Nylander (2-1, TOR)

The two teams generated five shot attempts apiece in the extra period, including a Tage Thompson shot from the high slot that required Samsonov to make a sprawling glove save with 1:22 remaining.

Matthews scored the winner on a one-timer from in front, set up by a pass from Marner behind the net.
