This may be the first time in her life Abbey Murphy didn't mind her shot finding a glove.

The Seattle Torrent forward and Team USA gold medalist didn't throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Chicago White Sox game on Saturday - she shot it off the pitcher's mound.

Murphy took the hill at Rate Field before Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies with her lumber in hand, placed the ball on the rubber and fired it high but straight over the plate to White Sox relief pitcher Hagen Smith.

Murphy, a native of Evergreen Park, Illinois (a south Chicago suburb), was a member of the 2026 gold medal winning United States women's national ice hockey team. She also has two gold medals from the IIHF World Championships, where in 2023 she set the tournament record for fastest goal ever scored.

She was the second pick of the 2026 PWHL draft. The Torrent will start their preseason slate on Sunday, November 29.
