Stars place Jamie Benn on injured reserve

Dallas captain sidelined by foot injury; forward Antoine Roussel activated @NHLdotcom

Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn was placed on injured reserve Wednesday because of a foot injury.

It is retroactive to Dec. 31. Benn was scratched from the game against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, and forward Antoine Roussel was activated by Dallas.

Benn was injured in the second period of a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday when he went awkwardly into the boards. The Dallas captain finished the game.

He hadn't missed a game with an injury since March 14, 2013 (wrist). He played every regular-season game since the 2014-15 season (202 in a row); Benn last missed a game April 11, 2014, the last game of the regular season when he was a healthy scratch to rest for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Benn will not play Saturday against the St. Louis Blues. The earliest he could return is Monday against the Los Angeles Kings.

"This is a situation where it's our responsibility to keep him out," coach Lindy Ruff said this week. "He could probably play, but to what effect he would be and where he would be in a couple days would be a big concern of ours."

Benn has 34 points (10 goals) in 38 games this season, including six points during a four-game point streak (one goal, four assists) that was extended against Florida.

Roussel hadn't played since sustaining an upper-body injury in practice on Dec. 21.
