Nurse, Ekholm help lead Oilers past Sharks in OT win

EDMONTON -- Darnell Nurse scored with 15 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 5-4 win against the San Jose Sharks at Rogers Place on Monday.

Nurse scored on a breakaway after Mattias Ekholm tied it 4-4 at 16:13 of the third period with his second goal.
"The guys are always joking in here that I get quite a few [breakaways] and never score," Nurse said. "That feels like the first one in a while. That was a once-in-a-blue-moon thing, I'm not going to start doing that."

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had two assists for the Oilers (40-23-8), who have won four straight and eight of 10. Jack Campbell made 28 saves in his first win since Feb. 11.
Edmonton is third in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings.
Erik Karlsson scored twice, and James Reimer made 47 saves for the Sharks (19-37-15), who have lost seven in a row and 12 of 13.
"They're one of the best teams in the League who have an awful lot of firepower, and I thought we competed our [rear ends] off," San Jose coach David Quinn said. "We're in a different situation from an organizational standpoint than they are.
"Our goalie played great and I thought we did a lot of good things tonight. It just wasn't enough. We almost got to the shootout, and anything can happen in a shootout situation. I just really liked our compete and our effort."

SJS@EDM: Barabanov nets his 15th goal of season

Alexander Barabanov gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 5:48 of the first period, scoring off a long rebound on a shot from Tomas Hertl.
Nick Bjugstad tied it 1-1 at 7:08 after taking a pass from Warren Foegele at the side of the net and lifting it in.
Kailer Yamamoto gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead 30 seconds into the second period, sliding a rebound in front underneath Reimer.
"I liked our willingness to win and our ability to find a win when an [opposing] goaltender was having a great night," Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. "We didn't play the game we wanted to play in the first two periods, but we knew what the stakes were, and you have to give our players credit for finding a way to get those two points. But nobody is blind to the fact we have to fix some things."
Steven Lorentz tied it 2-2 at 8:32 after scoring on a breakaway. Lorentz had his initial shot stopped, but he batted the rebound out of the air and into the net.
Karlsson put San Jose ahead 3-2 at 10:23 when he was left alone in front and converted on a pass from Fabian Zetterlund.
"They were good plays at the right time, and I think we need a bit more of that," Karlsson said. "I think at least today, we scored some goals. We got some taken away, but if you want to win hockey games in the League today, that's what you have to do (score)."

SJS@EDM: Karlsson puts Sharks on top in 2nd period

Ekholm tied it 3-3 at 11:48 on a backhand from in close.
Karlsson made it 4-3 at 14:23 on a shot through traffic from the slot before Ekholm stepped into a shot and scored top corner on Reimer to tie it with 3:47 left in the third period.
"We could have been a lot better tonight, I thought," Ekholm said. "But at the same time, these games are hard, you have to work yourself up and you have to get yourself going. We snuck it out, we could have been better, but it's hard to win in this league, so we'll take it and move on."

SJS@EDM: Ekholm nets his 2nd goal of game in 3rd

The Sharks were penalized with 1:41 remaining in the period when defenseman Mario Ferraro flipped the puck over the glass, putting the Oilers on the power play.
Reimer made a diving save on Draisaitl with 47 seconds left, and San Jose killed off the remainder of the penalty in overtime.
"The rebound popped out and we talked about how they like to sling it to the backdoor, and I was kind of off-balance, and I saw him pass it back to Draisaitl," Reimer said. "I just tried to get something on it and lucky enough he hit me. It was one of those where you're lucky to get one of those bounces and it was nice."
