Hall extends point streak to 17, but Devils lose to Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Taylor Hall scored to extend his point streak to 17 games, but the New Jersey Devils lost 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Friday.
Teuvo Teravainen redirected Brett Pesce's shot from the point to give Carolina a 2-1 lead at 9:37 of the third period.

"Somehow, I was in front of the net and it just goes in off my leg," Teravainen said. "Sometimes, that's what you need to get a big goal."

Derek Ryan and Justin Williams scored for the Hurricanes (29-25-11), who moved into a tie with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. Cam Ward made 25 saves.
Hall has 12 goals and 10 assist during his streak, the longest in the NHL this season. He has at least one point in all 24 games he's played in 2018 but missed three in a row Jan. 22-25 with a right hand/thumb injury.

Keith Kinkaid made 27 saves for the Devils (33-24-8), who lead the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets by five points for the first wild card in the East. New Jersey was coming off a 3-2 loss at the Florida Panthers on Thursday.
"We need a lot more guys going," Devils coach John Hynes said. "The last two games, we've been outplayed. We don't have enough guys committed enough and as detailed enough for us to have success, so we got what we deserved both last night and tonight."
Ryan gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 11:50 of the second period. His backhand pass through the crease was intended for Lee Stempniak, but the puck went off Devils defenseman Damon Severson's left skate and into the net.

"Especially in the first period, I felt like I was getting lots of chances, but the puck wasn't going in," said Ryan, who scored for the first time in 16 games. "Then I make kind of a desperate play in the second and I get a little puck luck. That's just how hockey works."
Hall tied the game 1-1 when he redirected Sami Vatanen's shot from the right half-wall on the power play with 33 seconds left in the period. Hall has scored a goal in three straight games.
Williams scored an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining to make it 3-1. He scored twice in a 4-1 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday after going eight games without a goal.
"[Williams] is so competitive," Ward said. "He wants us to rally with him. He's the veteran, he's the leader, and he's the guy who's been there and done that his whole career. His work ethic is second to none, and these kids can really learn a lot by watching him play."
