Moritz Seider wins Calder Trophy for best rookie

Moritz Seider had a memorable 2021-22 season, posting 50 points in 82 games played.
At the 2022 NHL Awards, the Detroit Red Wings defenseman also delivered one of the most memorable speeches.

Seider won the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the top rookie of the season, on Tuesday. Seider made up his acceptance speech on the spot, but two important people were missing from the audience.
"I didn't prepare a speech," Seider said. "Just go with the flow and don't mess it up. Big shoutout to everyone sitting here. My parents couldn't make it. They just got back from Croatia and thought it was more important to go on vacation."
Seider got a loud laugh from the entire crowd.
He ended his speech by thanking the Detroit fans.
"It's really fun to be a Red Wing," Seider said.
Seider's teammates and former Red Wings players congratulated him in a team video posted to Twitter.

"Mo Mo, congrats on winning the Calder," forward Sam Gagner said. "Unbelievable season. I'm happy I had a front-row seat for it all and can't wait to see what the encore looks like."
