The Colorado Avalanche visit Joe Louis Arena for the final time. The teams played at Colorado on Wednesday, when the Avalanche scored twice in the third period for a 3-1 win. The Avalanche are 3-2-0 in their past five games but have the worst record in the NHL, 18 points behind the Arizona Coyotes. "I like some of the things we're doing," coach Jared Bednar said. "I don't like our starts right now, to be honest, but we're playing with more energy and passion." Defenseman Anton Lindholm played 14:22 in his NHL debut and is expected to be in the lineup again.

Red Wings team scope

The Detroit Red Wings return home after splitting a two-game back-to-back road trip that ended with a 5-4 shootout win against the Coyotes on Thursday. The Red Wings are 8-0 in the shootout, 19-31-11 in games decided before then. "It was nice to get two points, especially the way we did it," captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We talked about needing to [get] the momentum back, and we did. We deserved those two points."

Status report

Bednar juggled his defense pairs during the win against Detroit, using Lindholm and Tyutin together for several shifts, with Barrie switching to play with Beauchemin. … After scratching Mantha for two games last week, he played against Colorado and Arizona but got two shifts in the third period against the Coyotes. The Red Wings recalled defenseman Brian Lashoff for possible emergency duty against the Coyotes but didn't end up needing him. He returned to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League after the game.
