Extra Shift 12.12.2022

One of the biggest moments of this game came just past the halfway point of the second period. At the time, the Lightning were leading Seattle, 2-1, but the Kraken had been dictating much of the action through the first 10 minutes of the second. The Lightning received the man advantage at 10:17 of the stanza and hoped to score a goal. Or, if they didn't convert, at least build momentum. But up until the final few seconds of the power play, the Lightning struggled to move the puck up the ice, let alone create chances in the offensive zone. It appeared that the Kraken would be the ones building momentum. But with time winding down on the penalty, Corey Perry skated to the right circle and attempted to make a centering pass. It hit off Vince Dunn and came back to Perry, who quickly snapped a shot into the top of the net.

The Perry tally was the start of a Lightning momentum surge. Just over a minute later, Brayden Point scored a highlight-reel goal, making it 4-1. The Kraken pulled Philipp Grubauer and replaced him with Martin Jones, but two minutes and eight seconds after Point's goal, Ross Colton deflected in Mikhail Sergachev's shot and the Lightning had a four-goal lead. Then the Lightning managed the final 24 and a half minutes well, not allowing the Kraken back into the game.
Those three quick scores helped the Lightning pull away in the second half of the contest. They also began the game strongly, netting two goals in the opening 7:24. The Lightning dominated those early minutes, playing with pace and passing the puck crisply and efficiently. The Lightning posted eight of the game's first 10 shots and owned nearly all of the possession. But the Kraken pushed back during the second half of the frame and cut the Lightning lead in half when they converted on an odd-man rush with 1:21 left in the period. Seattle consistently applied pressure and enjoyed a possession advantage during the first half of the second period as well. Prior to Perry's power play goal, the Lightning were getting outshot, 8-3, in the stanza. But Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all eight, preserving his team's lead.
The game featured a couple of Lightning statistical milestones. Nikita Kucherov registered three assists - the second of those was his 400th career helper. Sergachev had two assists, eclipsing 200 career points in the process. As well, Steven Stamkos extended his point streak to 14 games and now has 497 career goals.
The Lightning have gone 4-1-0 on their season-long six-game homestand. They'll look to wrap it up on a good note when they host Columbus on Thursday.
