SEATTLE, Wash. -- August 5, 2021 -- Today, the Seattle Kraken (@SeattleKraken) announced they have agreed to terms with defenseman Will Borgen (@WBorgen19) to a two-year contract ($900,000 AAV). Borgen was Seattle's selection from the Buffalo Sabres during the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft.
"Will is a responsible, defensive defenseman whose size and physical style of play can add a spark to a lineup," said Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis. "He's still young and developing, and we believe in his upside."

Borgen spent the 2020-21 season with the Sabres where he totaled 30 hits and 14 blocked shots and averaged 16:16 of ice time in 10 games. The blueliner, who stands at six-foot-three and 205 pounds, led Sabres skaters who played in at least two games in hits per 60 with 11.1, and his 5.2 blocked shots per 60 ranked third on the team. He led or tied for the team lead in hits in six of the 10 games he played last season.
The 24-year-old has appeared in 14 career NHL games, totaling 42 hits and 17 blocked shots while averaging 16:21 of ice time. Borgen also played in 140 games with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, from 2017-18 to 2019-20, scoring four goals and adding 21 assists.
Prior to making his professional debut, Borgen played three seasons (2015-16 to 2017-18) of collegiate hockey at St. Cloud State, where he posted 41 points (five goals, 36 assists) in 106 games. While at St. Cloud State, Borgen was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) All-Rookie Team in 2016 and was named the conference's best defensive defenseman in 2018. A native of Moorhead, Minnesota, Borgen won a bronze medal while representing the United States at the 2016 World Junior Championship. He was originally drafted by Buffalo in the fourth round (92nd overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
The Seattle Kraken will play their first game in 68 days on Oct. 12 at Vegas.
