NYI Recap: Islanders lose to Bruins in SO

The Isles picked up a valuable point in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden, a game that saw Robin Lehner and Tuukka Rask go save-for-save until Ryan Donato's game-deciding goal in the fourth round of the shootout.
As disappointing as it was to let the extra point slip away on Thursday, Head Coach Barry Trotz took an optimistic look at the point earned in a place they don't come easy.
"I'd take this game almost every night. It's a big point," Trotz said. "You never know if the point you get on the road, that may be the one that gets you to the promised land."

BOS 2 vs. NYI 1 (SO): Barry Trotz

Tied 1-1 after 60 minutes, the Islanders did everything but score in overtime. Mathew Barzal looked to have scored the potential game-winner 1:13 into the extra frame, but the goal was disallowed for goalie interference as Anthony Beauvillier crashed into the Bruins net.
Barzal then had a second opportunity on a partial breakaway, but the backhand move that beat Roberto Luongo in Florida three weeks earlier didn't work on Rask (28 saves), who also stuffed a breakaway chance from Jordan Eberle. Barzal, Brock Nelson, Valtteri Filppula and Josh Bailey came up empty in the shootout, while Donato scored the lone goal in the fourth round.
"It's obviously frustrating when you don't get the win, but it was a pretty good road game and to get a point out of it is nice," said Anders Lee, who opened the scoring in the first period. "Tuukka had a great game and kept us out of it, but so did Lenny, who played an incredible game. It comes down to a shootout."

LEHNER LOOKS SHARP IN LOSS:

While Rask skated away with the win, Lehner was one of the main reasons the Islanders were able to take a point out of Thursday's shootout loss, making 35 saves on 36 shots.
The 6'4 goalie was especially big for the Islanders late in the third period, stretching his pad out to rob Jake DeBrusk to ultimately send the game to overtime. In the shootout, he went toe-to-toe with DeBrusk, David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand before allowing Donato's winner.
The lone puck to beat Lehner in regulation came on the power play, a one-timer from Brad Marchand that he could hardly be faulted for.
"Lenny played great all game," Scott Mayfield said. "He made some huge saves and came up big for us and we kind of left him out on that PK goal, not much he could have done on that."

CIZIKAS RETURNS:

Casey Cizikas returned to the Islanders lineup after missing six games with a lower-body injury.
Cizikas was his usual spark plug self, generating energy on a line with Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck. Cizikas logged 13:19 TOI, threw a team-high tying five hits and went 8-for-16 (50%) on draws.

NOTES:

The Islanders power play went 0-for-1, extending its goalless streak to six games (0-for-12)... Anders Lee's goal was his eighth of the season, one behind Brock Nelson for the team lead... Scott Mayfield's assist was his 11th point of the season (3G, 8A), tops among Islanders defensemen.

NEXT GAME:

The Islanders return to Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
