Max Pacioretty said it best when he said that Vegas fell in love with the Golden Knights last season but has fallen in love with the game of hockey as time has gone on. The Golden Knights want to help continue that growing passion for the sport with VGK University.
Senior VP of Hockey Operations Murray Craven and Director of Hockey Operations Misha Donskov have organized VGKU for the second year to break the game of hockey down for fans to learn about rules, strategies and what to watch for when watching the Golden Knights play.
"Last year was absolutely incredible," Donskov said. "The amount of interest in the program from our fanbase was overwhelming."
This year, they've added a new element to further the interest in the great game of hockey. Those who attend the sessions will have optional on-ice instruction to compliment what they're learning about hockey away from the rink and to help everyone understand what hockey is like first-hand.

"Through our collective experience - playing, coaching, and working in professional hockey, we are able to provide our fans a very unique opportunity to learn about the game in a fun and engaging learning environment," Donskov said. "Interactive classroom sessions, .PPT presentations, and the use of video are all elements of our program and every VGKU session.
There are five core program goals that VGKU looks to accomplish every session:
"We are extremely fortunate to be a part of a passionate fan base," Donskov said. "We want to continue to educate our fans, grow the game of hockey in our city, and support the Las Vegas community."
Sessions will be held on Oct. 24, Dec. 9, Jan. 23, Feb. 9 and Feb. 22 ahead of Golden Knights games on those dates. VGKU students will get to see what they've learned from Craven and Donskov in action at T-Mobile Arena that night.
"The intent with the program is to educate our fans in a fun environment and to continue teaching them about the game using our team as an example," Donskov said.
Craven and Donskov intend to incorporate video into the sessions as they would for the Golden Knights to point out specifics of the game. The seminars will focus on Hockey 101, creating offense, defensive strategy, special teams and a day in the life of a hockey coach. By learning all of these different aspects of the game, fans can get that much more out of every hockey game that they watch.
"We're looking forward to another really fun year for the organization," Donskov said. "We want to give back and we think there's a lot of value there for our fans."
