The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman Marc Staal to a one-year, $1.1 million contract, according to General Manager Daniel Briere.

Staal, 36 (1/13/87), recorded 15 points (3-12=15) and 43 penalty minutes (PIM) in 82 games with the Florida Panthers during the 2022-23 season. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was one of six players on the team to skate in all 82 games and he appeared in all 21 Stanley Cup Playoff contests as the Panthers fell to Vegas, 4-1, in the Stanley Cup Final. He ranked third on the team in shorthanded time on ice per game (2:34) during the regular season and was one of four defensemen to average above 20 minutes per game during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Staal owns 229 points (52-177=229) and 523 PIM in 1,101 career NHL games in 16 seasons with New York Rangers, Detroit and Florida (2007-23). He became the 363rd player in NHL history to reach 1,000 games on March 12, 2022 and ranks sixth among NHL defensemen in games played since entering the League in 2007. Staal spent majority of his career with the Rangers (2007-20) and played five seasons under Head Coach John Tortorella from 2008-13. He served as an alternate captain for 10 seasons (2010-20). The left-shot blueliner was named a 2010-11 All-Star and named to the NHL Young Stars Roster in 2007-08 and 2008-09. The left-shot blueliner owns 20 points (7-13=20) and 52 PIM in 128 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He was originally selected by the Rangers in the first round (12th overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft.
