PRE-GAME STORY
NEWARK, NJ - Defenseman Damon Severson stepped onto a puck and fell into the end boards during the morning skate. He gingerly left the ice and did not return. Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said he will not play tonight.
"It doesn't look like anything too serious," Ruff said.
Center Jack Hughes left Saturday's game against the New York Islanders in the second period and did not return for precautionary reasons. Ruff said Hughes underwent tests and the club is hopeful he'll practice Tuesday.
Blueliner Ty Smith is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason, and may not be ready for the start of the regular season due to an injury. "He's going to be out for a little bit. I don't have an exact amount of time," Ruff said. "I don't anticipate him practicing for the next little while."
Bratt Back
Forward Jesper Bratt is expected to make his preseason debut for the Devils tonight. He had been scheduled to play in Friday's preseason home opener, but an illness (non-COVID related) delayed that debut.
Bratt has put the illness behind him and is ready to take the ice.
"It's good being back," Bratt said. "I feel way better today. I'm ready to go and extremely excited to play my first game. … It's been a long summer. You just want to come out there and play the game. I get a chance to play my first game and in front of fans at home, it's going to be a lot of fun."
With only three preseason games remaining, Bratt would like to appear in as many as possible.
"All three would be awesome," Bratt said. "The games are where you want to be. If I get a chance to play all three, I'll be ready to play all three. That would be great."
Bratt Pack
With Bratt back in the lineup, the team is getting the band back together. In this case, that band would be Bratt working a line with Nico Hischier and Pavel Zacha. The trio worked together for most of last season (when Hischier was healthy), and developed a good working flow.
"We know each other really well, on the ice and off ice," Bratt said of the longtime friends. "It'll be pretty easy for us to adapt back to each other.
"It's going to be fun. I was extremely excited when I saw the lineup."
Zacha had been working the early goings of training camp as a center. Ruff said the Czech forward would see time at both center and wing. That time is tonight.
Geertsen Debut
The Devils claimed Mason Geertsen on waivers from the New York Rangers Sunday. It won't take long for him to make his first appearance in black and red.
"I'm super excited to be here," said Geertsen, who found out about his new team after taking his mutt to the dog park. "We have a young group here. I know a couple guys from playing around the league. It's all fresh faces and meeting guys today."
There will be a lot of new things for Geertsen, who has been welcomed by former Colorado teammate Ryan Graves, to adjust to tonight. New team, new teammates, new system. And a (semi) new position. The Devils lined the 6-foot-4, 227-pound Geertsen up at forward, which is where he'll play tonight.
"I'm a hybrid. I was playing defense for my whole life and then I switched to forward. I go back and forth," Geertsen said. "I played forward for almost all of last year. That's where I've been playing lately, and it's where I'm comfortable at right now."
Along with his size, Geersten adds some bite to the lineup. He plays the game with a physical edge, and isn't afraid to cross the line when needed.
"It gives us a guy that has really good size and he has toughness," Ruff said. "If you look at the teams in our division and who we have to play against, I think that he can add an element that we don't have."
In fact, the Devils got a preview Geertsen's game. He faced his now teammates three nights ago as a member of the Rangers. He even mucked it up with a few of them.
"That's just hockey. It stays on the ice," Geertsen said. "I've fought my best friends. That happens on the ice. Everybody is nice here now."
Two Debuts | DEVILS MINUTE
Blackwood's Progression
Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood will play two periods against the Capitals tonight. He is continuing to work back from off-season heel surgery. Blackwood is trying to add strength and flexibility to the heel. He said he felt better than expected in his one period of action Saturday against the NY Islanders.

The Devils and Capitals meet for the second and final time of the preseason slate. The club's met last Wednesday in the nation's capital with New Jersey recording a 5-4 victory (in regulation as well winning the practice shootout).
The standout in that contest was 19-year-old rookie Alex Holtz, who notched two points (1G-1A) and a plus-3, as well as scoring the decisive shootout goal. The Devils are 3-0 in preseason play following a 2-1 overtime victory against the NY Islanders Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport, CT.
