PRE-GAME STORY
NEW YORK, NY - The Devils held an optional morning skate at Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 3 against the Rangers. All three goalies took part. Akira Schmid had a net to himself while Vitek Vanecek and Mackenzie Blackwood worked the opposite cage.
While it is a possible indication that Schmid is starting, head coach Lindy Ruff said the team hasn't decided yet which goalie will man the crease for the drop of the puck.
"It's a game-time decision," he said.
"I feel comfortable. I made a step this year," Schmid said. "Got that confidence for myself. You always have to be ready."
Ruff wouldn't disclose his lineup either, other than saying "every player we've got is an option. I'm not talking about lineup."
Road Warriors
The Devils were one of the best teams in the NHL on the road. They finished the year with a 28-9-4. The 28 wins tied a franchise record while their mark was the second-best in the entire NHL behind only Boston (31-8-2).
After losing the first two games of the series at home, New Jersey looks to turn the tide on the road for Games 3 and 4.
"We have a new opportunity to come here to the Garden and get back in this series," forward Jesper Bratt said. "They came into our building and got two wins. We know that we can do the same thing. We've been playing some good hockey on the road and we're excited for a fun game tonight."
While trailing 2-0 in the series may seem daunting, the truth is that each game is its own entity. It's not about which team gets off to a 2-0 lead, but rather which wins four of seven.
"We just have to win. First one to win four," defenseman Damon Severson said. "They got the jump on us at home. We have to come back. We're going to have to win at least one to keep the series going. It starts with tonight."
It doesn't just start with one game. It starts with one period, one shift, one battle.
"You really only have to focus on your next shift, next game, next period of play," Ruff said. "What's behind you now is behind you."
Big Guns
The Devils have scored two goals in two games so far. Jack Hughes has one goal (penalty shot) while Nico Hischier, Bratt, Dawson Mercer, Timo Meier and Dougie Hamilton are still seaking their first point.
For the Rangers, Adam Fox (6 points), Chris Kreider (4 goals), Patrick Kane (4 points) and Vladimir Tarasenko (2 goals) have created.
The Devils' big guns have to match (or outmatch) the Rangers' big guns if the team wants to avoid a push to the brink of elimination.
"They know they have to produce. There's no secret," Ruff said of his top players. "Sometimes in the playoffs you can get a spark from a second or third line, but your top players have to be the guys that get it done for you.
"They know they have to make the difference for us."
