PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -The Devils will take on the New York Islanders in the team's second pre-season game in as many days. Today's lineup will look completely different from Monday's group, as New Jersey has split its squad in two to avoid players playing on back-to-back days in pre-season.

Holtz is Heating Up

Any scouting report on Alexander Holtz will mention his lethal shot; however, last season in the forward's nine games with the Devils, the 2020 7th overall draft pick was unable to find the back of the net. With one season of professional hockey in North America in the books, and a big off-season, Holtz is starting to show that first NHL goal might be just around the corner.
Holtz has had a strong start to his training camp, scoring in both of his team's intrasquad scrimmages, while playing on a line with Ondrej Palat and Jack Hughes. All three of these players attended morning skate, so it looks like they may play together again tonight.
"We set out to see what Hughes's speed and creativity could bring to Holtz's game," Ruff said on the line of Palat, Hughes and Holtz. "A guy like Palat too, plays the game the right way and can be a key guy offensively, can be a key guy away from the puck. You've got a guy there who can help take care of both those players (Hughes and Holtz) in some of the defensive situations. On the offensive side, we're just looking for some chemistry."
"I think that helps a lot of course, playing with such high caliber players like Hughes and Palat. Helps my game, just going to try to work hard out there, creating space for those guys and use my shot," Holtz said following morning skate.

First Look at the Newest Devils

Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald was very busy this off-season, strengthening the defensive core of the team, and adding in some missing pieces on offense and in net. Five of those new faces are expected to play tonight: Erik Haula, Ondrej Palat, Brendan Smith, John Marino, and Vitek Vanecek.
All of these players have played the Devils at Prudential Center before, and remember it as a tough place to play as an opponent.
"I never thought it was an easy place to play," Haula said Tuesday morning. "The team comes out hot at the start and they play well at home, it was a tough building I always thought to play in."
Palat, who is playing for his second NHL team in his career, agreed with Haula's thoughts on Prudential Center.
"It was just always a hard place to play, always hard games. That's what I remember."

Goaltending Split

In last night's pre-season game, Mackenzie Blackwood and Nico Daws each had strong showings against the Canadiens. Tonight, Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid look to continue that trend against the Islanders. Both goaltenders will see time in the preseason tilt according to head coach Lindy Ruff.
"Both of them will get to play. We'll carry (splitting time) on a bit."

Hischier Update

Devils Captain Nico Hischier did not return to Monday's game after the first period due to cramping, per team officials. Coach Ruff had an update on the center after Tuesday's morning skate.
"Last night was more precautionary, he'll undergo some tests today to make sure that everything is good. I had a really conversation with him which leads me to believe he'll be playing again in the pre-season but you never know where some of these things lead."
