The Devils were shut out on home ice for the second time this season, in a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night. The Devils had not been shut out at Prudential Center since Oct. 20. The Devils hit plenty of posts but couldn't solve Detroit netminder Petr Mrazek.

Here at 10 takeaways from the game:
1. Taylor Hall missed his fourth game of the season. He took a maintenance day during Sunday's practice, but was unable to play against the Red Wings. He will also miss Tuesday night's contest when the Devils visit the Bruins.
Hall has a hand issue that will be re-evaluated on Wednesday when the team returns home from Boston.
With Hall missing from the top line, forward Kyle Palmieri took his spot alongside Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt.
2. Forward Blake Coleman was back in the lineup after he sat out the past three games as a healthy scratch. Coleman drew in, in place of an injured Brian Gibbons who has been placed on injured reserve with a broken thumb sustained against the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
With both Gibbons and Hall out against the Red Wings, Jimmy Hayes also drew back into the lineup. Hayes has not dressed in 13 games, last playing Dec. 15 against Dallas.
3. For a sixth straight game, the Devils allowed a first period goal to their opponent. The Devils found themselves down 1-0 to the Red Wings after one, as Detroit left wing Tyler Bertuzzi beat Devils goaltender Cory Schneider on a rebound. Schneider was sliding across his crease, outstretched to try to stop Bertuzzi, who found the back of the net at 7:36 of the opening frame.

  1. Coleman had a chance to tie the game when he came down the slot and tried to redirect a pass from Brian Boyle who was along the right wall. Mrazek made the save in close on just the third shot in an 11-minute span for the Devils.
  1. Detroit took a 1-0 lead into the second period and in doing so, snapped the Devils' six-game home streak of scoring in the first period.
    6. Devils captain Andy Greene nearly tied the game at one when he picked up a rebound off Mrazek from a Boyle point shot. Greene corralled the loose puck and fired it behind Mrazek from a tight angle. The shot made its way across the crease and dinged off the post and out, keeping the score at 1-0 in Detroit's favor.
  1. The power play didn't provide the spark the Devils needed against the Red Wings. What could have been a game changer left the Devils scratching their heads. New Jersey went 0 for 5 on the man advantage. The power play has been key for the Devils this season - ahead of Monday's game, it was ranked sixth in the league at 21.5 percent, and third at home at 27.8 percent.
    8. The Devils record against the Red Wings since the 2013-14 NHL season dropped to 3-3-2.
    9. Tonight's game marked the club's 10th of 16 back-to-back sets this season. The Devils are 5-3-2 in first games and 5-4-0 in second contests of back-to-backs.
    10. The Devils travel to Boston immediately after Monday's game. They will visit the Bruins on Tuesday night, up against one of the hottest teams in the league. The Bruins are winners of three straight games and have picked up at least a point in their last 16 (12-0-4).
