EAST MEADOW, NY - The Devils trailed on three separate occasions against the Islanders, and on three separate occasions came back to tie the game. When overtime solved nothing, it was on to a shootout to close out the rookie tournament.

Lenni Hämeenaho and Jeremy Wilmer both scored in the shootout, while Jakub Málek went 2-for-2 on saves against the Islanders to seal the win.

Shane Lachance scored in the second period, while Ben Steeves and Cam Squires scored in the third.

Lachance tied the game at 1-1 just 1:43 into the second period. The 23-year-old found a loose puck in the slot and spun around to take the shot that beat Joshua Kotai in the Islanders net.

Steeves brought the Devils within one, early in the third period, with New Jersey on the power play and Squires also scored a power play goal evening the score at 3-3.

Victor Eklund, Cole Eiserman and Tomas Poletin scored in regulation for the Islanders.

Málek stopped Eklund and Romano in the shootout.

The Devils went 1-1 in the two rookie games, as the focus now shifts to New Jersey's main training camp, opening with on-ice sessions on Thursday.

Here are some observations from the game:

• Luke Wilfley made his presence known on an early penalty kill when his hit on Kashawn Aitcheson near the Devils bench sent the Islanders head over heels into the New Jersey bench. Wilfley received stick taps and applause from his own teammates on the bench.

• Jakub Málek played both games without splitting duties with Jeremy Brodeur who served as the backup.

• Jeremy Hanzel and Charlie Leddy drew in on defense for their lone appearance of the two-game set, while forward invitees, Nathan Brown and Caelan Joudrey, played their first games of rookie camp.

Brown made his presence known by dropping the gloves with Islanders Gleb Veremyev with 2:02 to play in the second period, and New Jersey trailing 3-1.

• Veremyev is a native of Monroe Township, New Jersey.

• Steeves joined the Devils organization as part of the deal that brought Evan Rodrigues to New Jersey from Florida.

Matyas Melovsky and Mikael Diotte each finished the two games with two points. Diotte did not play in the second game, but had a goal and an assist in the opener, while Melovsky had a two-goal outing in the opening game.
