This marks the 11th meeting between the Capitals and the Penguins in the playoffs, the most in franchise history. The Capitals defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals in six games to advance to the second round for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons and for the fourth straight season, the longest active streak in the NHL. The Capitals also became the first team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after suffering overtime losses in Games 1 and 2 at home.
