Cale Makar scored twice in his hometown while Devon Toews and Jaden Schwartz each added a pair of goals to help the Avalanche defeat the Calgary Flames 7-3 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday. Nathan MacKinnon scored for Colorado, T.J. Hughes recorded his first-career NHL point and Brett Kulak posted two assists. In net for the Avs, Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves in his 200th NHL game. Overall, 13 different Colorado players recorded a point, including Brent Burns, who tied Chris Chelios for the 10th-most points by a defenseman in NHL history.

With the win, the Avalanche improved to 3-1-0.

How It Happened

Wedgewood made huge saves on Mikael Backlund's two shots from the doorstep at 3:10 and 3:11 of the first period, respectively.

Wedgewood made another key save when he denied Joel Farabee's breakaway attempt with the glove at 7:29 of the opening frame.

Colorado opened the scoring at 15:54 of the opening frame when Toews scored his first goal of the season via a tip-in from the doorstep set up by a perfect Cale Makar pass.

Adam Klapka tied the game for Calgary at 17:30 of the first period with a right-circle wrist shot.

Toews gave the Avs a 2-1 lead at 6:45 of the middle frame with his second goal of the game via a shot from above the left circle. With the primary assist on the goal, Noah Juulsen picked up his first point as an Av.

The Avalanche doubled its lead at 9:16 of the middle frame when Makar scored his second goal of the season via a right-circle shot off the rush.

MacKinnon gave Colorado a 4-1 lead at 11:39 of the second period with his third goal of the season via a one-timer from the point that concluded an Avalanche offensive-zone shift that lasted 1:44. Additionally, Zachary L'Heureux posted his first point as an Av with the assist on the goal.

Makar scored his second goal of the game and third of the season to give the Avs a 5-1 lead at 5:35 of the third period via a one-timer from the top of the left circle.

Colorado made it 6-1 at 6:34 of the third period when Schwartz scored his second goal of the season via a shot from the left slot assisted by T.J. Hughes, who picked up his first NHL point.

Backlund scored for Calgary to make it 6-2 at 7:17 of the third period via a deflection from the low slot.

The Flames made it 6-3 when Kevin Bahl scored with a shot from the right slot at 8:28 of the third period.

Schwartz scored his second goal of the game and third of the season at 9:41 of the final frame when his left-circle pass deflected off Flames defenseman Jacob Middleton's skate and in.
