PITTSBURGH --The San Jose Sharks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.
The Penguins lead the best-of-7 series 3-2. Game 6 is in San Jose on Sunday.

The Sharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 2:53 with goals from Brent Burns and Logan Couture. The Penguins answered with goals 22 seconds apart from Evgeni Malkin (power play) and Carl Hagelin to tie it 2-2 at 5:06 of the first.
Melker Karlsson put the Sharks back ahead 3-2 with 5:13 remaining in the first off a backhand feed from Couture, who had a goal and two assists in the period.
San Jose goaltender Martin Jones made that stand up by making 44 saves. Joe Pavelski scored into an empty net with 1:20 remaining to seal it for the Sharks.

What we learned: It wasn't pretty, but thanks to Jones and Couture, the Sharks got the win they needed to stay alive.
The first period was wild with San Jose and Pittsburgh combining for four goals in the opening 5:06, a record for the fastest four goals at the start of a Cup Final game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The Sharks finally got the first goal and played with a lead for the first time in the series, but Dainius Zubrus' penalty for delay of game at 4:21 halted their momentum. They somehow were able to get it back after the Penguins tied it.
Penguins rookie goaltender Matt Murray was shaky early, going down too soon on Burns' goal and allowing Karlsson's shot to go in off his glove. The Sharks didn't test Murray a lot after that, but Jones held the fort at the other end.
Pavelski's empty-net goal was his first point of the Cup Final.
What this means for the Sharks: They are 2-0 when facing elimination in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They need a win at home Sunday to force Game 7 back in Pittsburgh.

What this means for the Penguins: They have to fly back across the country to San Jose to play Game 6 but remain one victory from winning the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in their history.
Key moment: With the Sharks clinging to a 3-2 lead and 4:54 remaining in the second period, Jones came up with the save of the night on Nick Bonino in front. Jones made a left-pad save on Phil Kessel's shot from the left circle, but left a rebound in front that Bonino appeared to have lined up for sure goal off his backhand. Jones kicked out his left leg and got his toe on the puck to keep the Sharks ahead.
Unsung player of the game: Chris Tierney was solid again centering the Sharks' third line and had a key block on a Kessel shot in the second period. He also went 11-10 on faceoffs.
What's next: Game 6 is at SAP Center in San Jose on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVA Sports).
