Ducks-Win-Preds

ANAHEIM -- John Gibson made 10 of his 34 saves in overtime to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 shootout win against the Nashville Predators at Honda Center on Monday.

Ryan Getzlaf scored in the second period and Pontus Aberg and Rickard Rakell scored in the shootout for Anaheim (8-8-3), which is 8-0-2 this season when holding the opponent to two goals or fewer.
"It's definitely a step in the right direction, and hopefully something we can build off," Gibson said. "It seems like we've been able to win one here and there, but not go on a run. Hopefully we can start stringing some together, take this as a stepping stone and build from it."

Kevin Fiala scored in the third period and Pekka Rinne made 29 saves for Nashville (13-3-1), which failed to become the third NHL team to open a season 9-0-0 on the road (2006-07 Buffalo Sabres, 2009-10 New Jersey Devils).
The Predators had a golden opportunity to extend their road winning streak when they were given a power play after Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg took a slashing penalty at 2:51 of overtime. They went 0-for-7 with the man-advantage.

"I thought we started to get some looks in overtime," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "We could have won the game a bunch of times on the power play, and it just didn't go for us. It's got to be better, but there were an awful lot of looks."
Fiala tied the game 1-1 with a one-timer from the left face-off circle off a short pass from Turris at 3:07 of the third period.
Rinne helped extend the game to overtime when he reached behind his back and made a blocker save at 18:15 of the third period off a deflected puck that caromed over his right shoulder.
"We fought back again and got one point so we are happy about that," Fiala said. "I think we have to play a better game if we want two points. We had a chance to bring two points back, but overall we have to play better. We can't just think we can do it in the third period all the time."
Getzlaf gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 19:30 of the second period off a backhand pass from Rakell just above the goal line. Getzlaf passed the puck to Rakell along the wall, found space between Predators defensemen Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis and chipped the puck over Rinne's left shoulder.

"It was a great test for us, especially playing against those guys," Rakell said. "It shows we can play with any team in this league."

They said it

"We had a lot more to give. [Anaheim] played well. Give them credit; they were moving their feet, they were making plays, but I thought we weren't the best version of ourselves tonight. It comes down to a shootout and it wasn't our way this time." -- Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis
"We felt we embarrassed ourselves with our effort and our lack of competitiveness in our last game (a 5-1 loss against the Minnesota Wild on Friday). We needed a response game to feel good about ourselves. We felt we got that tonight." -- Ducks coach Randy Carlyle
