WASHINGTON-- The Washington Capitals won their 13th straight home game, 2-1 against the Edmonton Oilers at Verizon Center on Friday.
Tom Wilson and Justin Williams scored, and Braden Holtby made 30 saves for the Capitals (41-12-7), who tied their record for consecutive home wins.

Williams gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 5:48 of the third period. He swiped in a puck from the right circle to beat goalie Cam Talbot on his far side.

Williams and linemates Evgeny Kuznetsov and Marcus Johansson were tasked with the matchup against Connor McDavid's line most of the game.
"Coach [Barry] Trotz gave us a challenge to go against McDavid tonight, and I felt for the better part of the game, we had the puck more than them, and that's really how you shut him down," Williams said. "He can't score if he doesn't have the puck."

McDavid assisted on Leon Draisaitl's goal, and Talbot made 24 saves for the Oilers (33-21-8).
"I thought it was a pretty good effort for us overall," Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. "We were right there pretty much the whole game. We still maybe could have picked it up a little bit, but overall we can't be upset about that one. We can't hang our heads. We played hard, and it's a top team in the League right now, so it kind of shows where we're at. Honestly, it kind of gives us a little confidence that we played so well against that team."
Wilson scored at 12:22 of the first period to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Draisaitl tied it 1-1 35 seconds into the second period with his 23rd of the season.

Capitals defensemen Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik did not play, each scratched with a lower-body injury. Forward T.J. Oshie missed the game with an upper-body injury.
"I think it sends a good message to everybody that we can handle a little adversity and we can handle guys stepping up into bigger roles and doing more of that," Trotz said. "From our standpoint, it's a little bit of an obstacle, but it's also a little bit of a character-builder for us, and it's forcing us to play at a higher level with some people out."

They said it

"I thought it was outstanding. We give that team a lot of credit. We knew what they were capable of coming in, and we knew there was a lot of areas that we were going to have to be really good or they were going to expose us. We shut down their big players. I think [Kuznetsov] was obviously phenomenal on the defensive side. It's good defense when we have the puck. But playing against Connor McDavid isn't easy, and he controlled the play. That's inevitably what controlled the game for the most part." -- Capitals goalie Braden Holtby
"Our team's playing really well. We're making it tough for teams to come into this building, which is something we always kind of wanted to do. We've had a group effort all year long, and especially the latter [part] of the season we've been doing really well. A couple big pieces of ours go down, and great work by these guys stepping in against a tough Oiler team that has pace and has good physical presence." -- Capitals forward Tom Wilson
"He's so good. He's so good with the puck and he's a passer. He's good, and they have a couple of guys who can shoot the puck as well. They have some real good combinations on their team, so they're dangerous." -- Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom on Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov
