The Senators took a 2-1 lead at 5:43 of the second when Stone one-timed a pass from behind the net by Brassard for his 11th goal.

Coreau, making his third NHL start, got the win with his 92-year-old grandmother, Pat Thompson, watching him play for the first time. Coreau is from Perth, Ontario, located about 40 miles west of Canadian Tire Centre.

When told his grandmother said it was the best day of her life, Coreau said: "Well, that's good. That means I'm probably one of her favorite grandchildren. She's a wonderful woman. A great grandmother, minus the pink hat and mittens she knit me. I was so happy she could make it. She's 92, so it might have been a lot getting her here, but it was worth it."
Coreau made a series of good saves in the first period.
"I thought it was the best game he played for us of the three," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said.

"It's something special. The rivalry is there between us and Toronto. It's going to be awesome. I'm really excited and looking forward to it. "I thought [Anthony] Mantha was excellent tonight. I thought he was maybe the best player on the ice. He's 6-foot-5, and when he wants to skate like that, he's a heck of a player and he skated great tonight." -- Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill
"When you have a 5-on-3, you have to find a way to score a great goal. The game was tied. That's obviously something we're going to address … obviously something we could do a lot better." -- Senators center Derick Brassard
