Panthers defeat Hurricanes in shootout

SUNRISE, Fla.-- Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the shootout, and the Florida Panthers ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at BB&T Center on Tuesday.
Jaromir Jagr scored a power-play goal to join Gordie Howe and Chris Chelios as the only players to score multiple goals at 45 or older in the NHL, according to TSN. Jagr scored against the Anaheim Ducks on Feb. 17, two days after he turned 45.
"I felt like we played very good in the first period and for whatever reason we thought it's over after 20 minutes," Jagr said. "We just gave them the momentum. They started playing better and better, started scoring goals. At the end of the night, I felt like we were lucky to get one point. We've got to learn we cannot play only 20 minutes."

Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers (29-23-10), who ended a four-game homestand (1-3-0) that followed the first 5-0-0 road trip in Florida history.

Roberto Luongo, starting for only the third time in seven games, made 23 saves and stopped Lee Stempniak and Sebastian Aho in the shootout.
"Obviously it was a big two points for our club," Luongo said. "We lost three in a row; it was not acceptable as a team to go through that kind of stretch, especially at home. We really need these ones. Maybe it wasn't as beautiful as we wanted it to be, but we got the job done and we scored some big goals in the shootout."

Cam Ward, making his 600th start for the Hurricanes, made 29 saves. He is the 11th NHL goalie to start 600 games for one team, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Stempniak and Aho scored for Carolina (25-25-9), which is 1-5-2 in its past eight games.
Jagr made it 1-0 at 12:35 of the first period after Carolina was penalized for having too many men on the ice before Trocheck increased the lead to 2-0 when he scored on the rebound of Reilly Smith's shot.
Stempniak scored at 9:46 of the second after taking a saucer pass from Teuvo Teravainen across the crease, and Aho tied it 2-2 at 5:48 of the third period on a rebound.

"That was a good point after the way we started," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. "I give them credit for finding a way and digging deep and gut out a point."

Goal of the game

Jagr's 761st NHL goal began when Barkov backhanded a pass between his legs to Huberdeau in the left circle. Huberdeau skated to the left of the net before sliding a pass in the slot to Jagr, who one-timed it past Ward.

Save of the game

A little less than a minute before Jagr scored, he had another great chance after a shot from the point hit him in the front of the net. The right wing grabbed the loose puck and took a quick shot along the ice, but Ward kicked out his right leg to make the save.

Highlight of the game

Barkov improved to 5-for-8 in the shootout this season when he skated near the boards, came to the front of the net from a sharp angle and deked back and forth between flipping a backhand shot past Ward.

Unsung performance of the game

Carolina forward Phillip Di Giuseppe played a season-high 20:24, had a game-high four hits and was tied for the Hurricanes' lead with four shots.

Need to know

Hurricanes forward Brock McGinn left the game after the first period because of an upper-body injury and did not return. Forward Jeff Skinner, Carolina's leading scorer with 40 points, did not play because of an upper-body injury. Peters did not have an update on either player after the game. ... Luongo got his 453rd NHL victory, moving him within one of Curtis Joseph for fourth place on the NHL's all-time list.
