No. 90 is the new lucky number seven, just ask the most famous emergency backup goalie (EBUG) of all time.

David Ayres
, the only EBUG in
NHL history to earn a win
back on Feb. 22, 2020], had some advice for the newest Maple Leafs goalie pressed into duty, Alexander Bishop.
The
[Toronto Maple Leafs signed Bishop

, a goalie from the University of Toronto, to an amateur contract to serve as their backup before their 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators Saturday. The 24-year-old suited up in number 70, but didn't get in the game. Which is where Ayres offered his advice.

Ayres
famously stopped
eight of 10 shots over 28:11 for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 6-3 victory over the Maple Leafs while wearing "lucky number 90."
But No. 90 was cool long before Ayres wore it.
In March of 2018, Scott Foster - a then 36-year-old accountant - got his big chance when he donned No. 90 for the Chicago Blackhawks and became the first EBUG in NHL history to make a save. Foster stopped all seven shots he faced in the Blackhawk's 6-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets.

Foster
stepped in for Blackhawks
when then-starting goalie Collin Delia - who filled in for an injured Corey Crawford - went down early. Delia was credited with the win, so two years later, Ayres made his own history while also wearing No. 90.
There must be something to that number.
