Jonathan Bernier Ottawa Senators save NHL Global Series Stockholm Sweden 2017 November 11

PITTSBURGH--Jonathan Bernier will be back in between the pipes for the Colorado Avalanche tonight as the team plays the third game of its four-city road trip at PPG Paints Arena versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Bernier's return to the crease will be the only change that Colorado head coach Jared Bednar will make to his lineup. That means the club will use the nontraditional alignment of 11 forwards and seven defensemen for the third straight outing.

Forwards Gabriel Bourque and Nail Yakupov and defenseman Duncan Siemens will be scratched. In Yakupov's case, the right wing is suffering from a bit of an illness.
"He isn't feeling that well," Bednar said. "It's been kind of bugging him for a couple days now, so he'll be out tonight again."
Monday's matchup is the first half of a back-to-back set, with the Avs playing on Tuesday in the nation's capital against the Washington Capitals. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov is set to start in that contest against his former team.
Bernier last played on Dec. 3 against the Dallas Stars, but he wasn't able to finish the contest. He made five saves on nine shots before being replaced midway through the second period by Varlamov.
Bednar didn't seem too worried about Bernier finding his previous form, recalling how the Laval, Quebec, netminder went 2-1-1 when he played four straight games while Varlamov was sick last month.
"He played really good in the net for us," Bednar said of that Nov. 19-25 stretch. "He had a bad night (last time), so it is what it is. We've had other players that have had bad nights in different times of the season. He's a focused guy, he's a determined guy, and now he gets his chance to go back in there and have a good night again for us."

In 11 contests, Bernier has a 4-6-1 record, 3.24 goals-against average and .891 save percentage. Those latter two statistics are a bit inflated from his performance versus Dallas, when he entered with a 2.99 goals-against average and .901 save percentage.
Colorado will look to build on its 7-3 victory two nights ago at the Florida Panthers against a tough Penguins squad that has won the past two Stanley Cups. Pittsburgh is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday and is finishing up a five-game homestand this evening.
"Four lines that can score, deep team, good goaltending. It's a similar type of team as Tampa. A lot of experience, and they know how to win," Bednar said of the Penguins. "What I take out of our last couple of games is that I like our urgency and our intensity going into those games. Our details got better. In the Florida game, we took a lot of steps forward from Tampa from some of the things we liked. We got to do it again tonight. We got to take another step forward tonight."
The Avalanche broke out in the third period versus the Panthers, as it tallied four times, with Blake Comeau assisting on two of them.
"We addressed some things that maybe were costing us some goals and costing us some games," Comeau said of the club being able to end a four-game losing streak. "I thought the guys did a good job of responding last game. We got two tough games coming up on the back-to-back, so tonight it will be important that we get off to a good start and translate what we did last game into this game."
This will be the seventh of 11 back-to-back sets that the Avs will play this year, but the team's next one won't be until Jan. 22-23 when it goes to eastern Canada for contests at the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.
The Avalanche will play the Penguins again for the second and final matchup in a week's time, as it hosts the series finale at Pepsi Center next Monday.

JOHNSON IS ALRIGHT

Defenseman Erik Johnson played in his 400th game with Colorado on Saturday night and even scored the eventual game-winning goal in the third period, but he wasn't able to finish contest after blocking a shot.
It was a scary moment for him and the club when the big blueliner left for the locker room with six minutes to go in the third period, but it ended up being all good.
"It just hit me on the inside of the knee. A little bit of a stinger but all good now." Johnson said after Monday's morning skate. "It just kind of hit me in a funny spot, wasn't expecting it. Got some treatment, took the day off (yesterday) and ready to go."
Johnson continues to lead Colorado in average ice time at 26:12, which ranks fifth in the NHL, and is second in the league with 31.67 shifts per game. His four goals this season are the most by Avalanche defensemen.
