Lindholm, a defenseman, developed his hockey skills with his hometown Skelleftea hockey program in Sweden, starting with the under-16 team. He made his Swedish Hockey League with Skelleftea as an 18-year-old in 2011-12. In 2013-14, he played one regular-season SHL game for Skelleftea and 14 in the playoffs to help them win the SHL championship.
The Colorado Avalanche were impressed enough to select him in the fifth round (No. 144) of the 2014 NHL Draft. Lindholm spent two more seasons with Skelleftea, and signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Avalanche on May 24, 2016.

He was assigned to San Antonio of the American Hockey League to start the 2016-17 season but played well enough to get the chance to make his NHL debut against the Detroit Red Wings on March 15, 2017. He averaged 14:45 per game in 12 games but did not have a point.
Lindholm spent all of 2017-18 with Colorado, and got his first NHL point on Jan. 25, 2018, an assist against the St. Louis Blues. He provided a physical presence in the 48 games he played, averaging 2.1 hits per game, second among Colorado defenseman.
